Of Buttercups and Dust

It had been several months since that day, and to most, the king's illness was just a distant memory. But I still remembered it.
Ever since Mom had told me about the buttercups and how it was an easy mistake to make, I had been thinking, formulating a plan.
When I had first joined the Dreemurr family, they taught me all about the Monster-Human war. About how the monsters had been driven underground. And most interesting to me, about how monsters could absorb a human soul, and how such a being could pass through the barrier.
Now, after months, I had a plan. But I needed help. Who would keep my secret? Who would do anything I said? Who was my best friend? Asriel. He would be perfect.
And so I told him what I was planning, and got him to promise to help me.
I would gather some golden flowers. For tea, I would tell Mom and Dad. I did have a love for the stuff, but I would make a fatal "mistake."
Buttercups, as Mom had told me so long ago, looked almost exactly the same. And nobody would be any the wiser. After all, I had dons some reading. Buttercups would affect me differently than they did a monster.
To the rest of the Underground, it would seem I just fell mysteriously ill.
Soon it was time to put my plan into action. I went to the Ruins, gathering a huge armful of buttercups and laying them to dry, then grinding them to the right size to make tea.
That took near a week of sneaking out every day while Mom was busy.
Then, when my tea leaves were complete, it was time. That night I brought my tea back, hiding it in my room. I made a small cup, drinking it after dinner. Nothing unusual there.
Every evening I did that. Soon, I was sick, very sick, but still I kept  having Asriel make me tea, saying it was the only thing I could keep down.
Mom and Dad got worried. I wasn't getting better. Asriel begged me to stop, but I reminded him why I was doing this, how we would set all the monsters free.
Soon, I reached the point of no return. There was no backing out now. Soon, all that was left of me was my soul.
And now it was Asriel's turn. I had told him to absorb my soul, to take it and become a god. Under the pretext of wanting to say goodbye to me, he came into my room, picked up my lifeless body, and then, all at once, we were one being.
I could hear his every thought and he could hear mine. And the power I could feel. It was unbelievable. With all this power, we could surely save the monsters.
When Royal Guards tried to stop us, it took over, telling them in Asriel's voice that my last wish had been to see the golden flowers in my village. They believed it, and besides, there was little they could do to stop us.
We passed them, and then, like breaking through the surface of a river, we were above ground, in the Overworld.
Asriel and I carried my body to the village where I had lived, me leading the way.
We placed my body on the flowers, right in the center of the village.
Soon, the villagers had emerged. Here was the chance we had been waiting for. Asriel and I both knew what was supposed to happen next. We would kill six humans, he would absorb their souls, and we would together break the barrier.
But there was a flaw. The humans began to attack, shouting, "MONSTER!! MONSTER!! THEY KILLED A CHILD!"
And then a second flaw. Asriel, regaining control, refused to fight back. He picked up my body, turned, shielding it from the humans' blows, and began to walk back to Mt. Ebott.
"Asriel! Asriel, what are you doing? Remember the plan!! We bee the souls to free the monsters!!" I shouted in his mind, but he didn't respond. However, I could feel him. He was afraid, and also, he was sad.
We reached the barrier and passed back underground. Stumbled into the throne room.
He collapsed in the ground.
He was dying.
"I'm... sorry... Chara... I... let..... you....... down."
"No!! No!!! No!!! Asriel!! Asriel I'm sorry!! This was all my fault!! It was my fault!! Don't die, please don't..."
But it was too late. His dust scattered across the flowers.
I was faintly aware of screaming. Of tears and crying, of Mom and Dad kneeling by Asriel's dust. But then, my determination ran out. I was out of time. Everything went dark
