"I should have been there."
You look up at Tyler, your vision blurred from your tears.
You're lying on the couch, your knees curled up to your chest, your head in Tyler's lap. Tyler absentmindedly runs his fingers through your hair.
"I should have been there," he mumbles again. "I could have left my place sooner. I could have...I don't know, stopped him if I was there..."
Tyler shifts his eyes down to you.
"L-Like Josh. He punched him. Remember that?" Tyler half-laughs, but he doesn't smile. "I'm not as strong as he is. I-I wish I was. I wish I could have been there for you. He wouldn't have done that if I was there."
No, you desperately want to say. No, Tyler, no. It's not your fault.
But you can't say anything.
