Chapter 11
"I just need you to distract Paul while I talk to Cam and vice versa." I tell them.
Stark nods but Bass is unconvinced. I can tell he thinks it isn't going to work.
"How exactly do you want us to distract them?" Bass asks as he runs his hand through his hair.
"Simple. Talk pack stuff." I shrug. What else would they talk about?
"Pack stuff?" Bass questions.
"You're thinking too much." I say.
"Fine. Let's go Stark."
Stark and Bass both leave to find Paul. Since Cam is closer to where I am right now I'll head over to him. He's been staying in the basement. So that's where I'm going.
I'm more nervous than anything. I should be mad at him but I'm not completely. I've had time to cool off. I've never been a hot head anyway.
I turn the gold knob to the basement door and it clicks. I'm sure he heard it. I close the door and lock it just in case Bass and Stark fail at stalling Paul. We don't need anymore fights.
I quickly walk down the wooden stairs only to be greeted by darkness. Where are the lights? I never been down here so I'm not sure where anything is. I'm certain Cam is down here but I can't see much.
"You shouldn't be down here." His voice is thick and raspy. Like he's been crying.
"Cam?" I call. There's no answer.
I continue to walk and I find a light switch on the wall. I switch it on and I'm in shock at what I see. Surrounding Cam is empty alcohol bottles. There's too many to count. Did he really drink all of this?
I walk closer trying to avoid the empty glass bottles. All the labels read Jack Daniels. I never took Cam for a drink away your troubles type of guy. Maybe punch walls and kill people type of guy.
"You should go." Cam's words are robotic. No sign of my Cam.
It breaks my heart to see him this way but I'm not going to baby him.
"Got anymore?" I ask sitting on the top of the velvet couch that is pushed up against the opposite wall of the stairs.
I move a little closer and notice he has dark circles under his eyes and his facial hair has grown out a bit. If it wasn't for his depressed state this new look would be a complete turn on.
He arches an eyebrow before shaking his head no. "I wouldn't give you any if I did."
"That's no fun," I say. Looking around I see why I've never been down here, it's basically a storage room.
The only thing not in boxes or covered in plastic or white sheets is a really old pool table. All the balls are on the table but I don't see any pool sticks.
"I'm not trying to be." He replies.
"You look like shit, you know." I say.
Cam's head snaps up to me. He opens his mouth to speak but closes it again. I don't have much time before Paul figures out I'm not in the library so he needs to talk now.
"I'm really sorry Aspen. You deserve better. You should just re-."
"Don't you dare. I would never." I say cutting him off. Is he crazy?
"You saw what happened. What I did to you because I got angry. That was all me. Chase wasn't in control. How could you forgive me after that?" He asks looking away.
I get off the couch to see his face. Kneeling in front of him I say, "I know that. Because you are my mate. I can't stay mad at you forever. But what you did was wrong Cam. If you do it again- don't force me say the words. Just know the consequences will be dire." I manage to get out.
