She threw the suitcase on the bed, opened the closet and grabbed her clothes. The rapid pumping of her heart, the numerous frustrating and anger filled thoughts in her mind, merged into a blur. All she felt was an urgency to get out; get out of that room, that house and the people in that house. She heard the creaking noise of the door and halted, her heart beat stopping momentarily. Still turned towards the closet, she closed her eyes shut, the act causing another set of tears flow down her cheeks. She held the clothes in her hand tighter and threw them with more vigor and urgency into the suitcase. The touch of his hand on her shoulder shook her for an instant with a new set of emotions, but she managed to ignore them and continued with her packing.

“Sorry Pallavi,” Prithvi whispered. She pressed her teeth tight, walked towards the suitcase and tried to zip it. He held her wrist. “Please... don’t do this.” She halted and stared at his hand holding her wrist for a few seconds. She took a deep breath, lifted her head up and glared at him with her reddened face before shrugging her wrist off from his hold. Grabbing the handle of the suitcase, she turned around and walked a few steps towards the door when she felt him grip her arm, his hold tight enough for her to not be able to shrug him off.

“Tell me what to do to make you stay.”

She froze at his question. Trying to set aside the turmoil within her, she repeated his question in her mind. More tears escaped her eyes as she tried to understand and make sense of their situation. After about a minute, she turned around to face him. She searched his face and stared into his eyes, deliberating whether she should answer him or not.

“Tell me,” she said with her voice trembling, “that you love me.”

The room filled with silence. The grip on her arm loosened; the remorse in his face replaced with something else, something that felt like anger, hatred, indifference. His lips quivered slightly as he stared back at her. She stood in shock, looking straight into his eyes. In a quick movement, he gripped her arms and pulled her towards him. Glaring at her face with narrowed eyes, he whispered, “I love you.”

As soon as he spoke those words, he pushed her away with a thrust, walked out of the room and slammed its door shut. She caught the wall to hold herself from falling and stared at the door that just closed. Her heart pounding, she ran up to the door and banged on it with her fist. “I HATE YOU! I HATE YOU!” she screamed multiple times before sliding on the floor and crying bitterly. The closed door seemed to depict the harsh reality that there was no way, no path, that could connect their hearts. After a few minutes, she wiped her tears, stood up, held her suitcase and marched out of the house. She did not know what to do with her life; all she knew was that she could not live with her husband anymore.
