chapter 7 - Dinner

VENESSA'S POV

School was now over and I was at my locker. I jumped when I turned to see Derek in front of me.

"Oh sorry, I didn't mean to scare you." Derek said with a smile.

"It's ok." I said with a laugh because how jumpy I can be. We started to walked to the front of the school before Derek stopped me. I looked at him with a questionable look and waited for him to speak.

"Well I never got your number, so- I- uh- can I have your number." Derek asked nervously. He was asking for my number? Well of course I'm going to give it to him. We switched phones to put our numbers in them then gave them back to each other.

"Thanks." Derek said and we continued to walk. When we got outside of school, I saw Nick waiting for me at the car. I started to walked when Derek grabbed my wrist. I can't get over how every time we touched and I felt sparks everywhere... and I loved it. "You know Venessa, I agree with Ella." He said and still was holding my wrist. "I think we'd be a cute couple." He continued and I blushed.

"Me too." I whisper and the biggest smile appeared on his face. "Nick is waiting for me. I gotta go, but I'll see you at 6 o'clock for dinner, right?" I said and he nodded. He let go of my hand and I left.

Me and Nick drove home listening to the radio, before Nick turned it off. Nick clears his throat and asked, "Do you agree?"

"With what?" I asked while looking at him.

"That you and Derek would be cute together." He said and I thought for a moment.

"Well yea I think so... I mean I like Derek, like a lot." I said and he smiled. We stopped at a red light and he turned to me.

"Well I think I like him too. He seems like a great guy for you... But if he hurts you in anyway, I will kill him." my brother said and I laughed.

"You can't try to kill everyone who's mean to me." I said after I finished laughing.

"Well I won't KILL them, but I will try if they break your heart." My brother said and started to drive when the light turned green.

"Well thanks Nick." I said and we arrived at home. We got out of the car and went inside. I went into the kitchen and started to cook dinner. I was making my family recipe of lasagna. My grandmother taught me before she passed away.

When I finished, it was already 5:30 so I went to get ready. I fixed my makeup and hair then changed. I put on my light skinny jeans, gray crop-top that said 'smile', and my gray vans. I went down stairs when I heard the doorbell ring. When I went to the door, I saw Nick already got it. It was Derek wearing jeans and a black shirt that fit him just right. "Hey, Derek." I said and he looked toward me with a smile. We walked to the table and the boys sat down. I got them their drinks, and brought the lasagna in and cut everyone a piece.

We started to eat when Derek said, "Wow, this is amazing."

"Thanks, my grandmother taught me." I said and he nodded.

"So, Derek, when did you move here?" Nick asked.

"Just this week." Derek answered.

"Oh, ok... Do you play any sports?" Nick asked. He really wanted to get to know guys before I dated them so this was normal to me. I let him have a little interview and eat dinner.

"Well I used to play football and basketball, but I stopped when I started moving around a lot." Derek answered. Moving around a lot? Does that mean he will move again soon? Well I hope not.

"Moving around soon? Are you gonna be moving anytime soon again?" Nick asked almost reading my mind.

"We I don't think so. I moved here and I'm really liking it so I'll be staying a while." Derek said then looked at me with a smile.

"Well if anything happens between you and my sister, you can't just move away then break her heart. I mean you can't just-" Nick said protectively.

"No, no, no. I would never do that to her." Derek said.

"Ok, good." Nick said sounding convinced. "So, your family? Parents or siblings?" Nick asked.

"Well, all my family died a while ago and I'm the only on left, last of my descendants I guess you could say." Derek said looking sad but quickly recovered.

"Well I'm sorry." Both me and Nick say at the same time.

"It's ok but I did have a little sister. My parents worked all day then came home to be a family. It was mostly me and my sister. I loved her so much. Me and my sister were just like you two, you know caring, protective, and just loving." Derek said.

"Well how did they die?" Nick asked and I elbowed him. "Ouch! What was that for?" Nick yelled.

"Don't be rude. He could be sad about it." I said quietly and Nick huffed.

"No, no, it's ok. They died in a car crash."

"Oh, I'm sorry man, I didn't mean to push it." Nick said. I grabbed Derek's hand under the table and started to rub his hand with my thumb. When I grabbed his hand, his head shot up to look at me.

He quickly recovered and answered, "No, it's ok. It happened a really long time ago."

"Well since we finished with dinner and the sad conversation, let's change it to dessert. Everyone loves dessert. How does cake sound?" Nick said trying to change the subject, and me and Derek nodded. Nick took our dishes, put them in the sink, and got the cake. We all got a piece and finalized shortly after. "Well thanks, man, for coming to dinner tonight. I like to get to know my little sisters' friends, you know?" Nick said.

"No, thank you for having me." Derek said and helped bring the dishes into the sink. "I guess I should be heading home now." He said.

"Ok, let me walk you out." I said and we walked to the door. We both walked outside and closed the door.

"Thanks for having me over." Derek said.

"Well thanks for coming." I said.

"No problem." He said. "Well um I'll just be going now." He said awkwardly.

"Um, ok." I said.

"So um- can I- hug?" He said stuttering and I nodded. He wrapped his arms around my waist, and I wrapped mine around his neck. We stayed like that for a few seconds before I pulled away.

"You know, we should hang out tomorrow." I said and he smiled.

"I would love that." He said.

"Ok, well I'll text you tomorrow then." I said and he nodded then left. When he left, I went back inside and helped Nick clean. After cleaning, I went upstairs and changed then went to bed.
