We had walked on for a few hours when in the distance I saw a similar looking thing to what I saw with the man in the cart.
“Jace! Jace! We’re here! Look!”
At the time he was looking down at the ground glumly but he looked up, a gleam of hope in his eyes.
“Oh my gosh, it is!” a smile spread on his face from one ear to another. He started to run towards the city in the distance. I smiled and ran after him.
Once we were in the boundaries we were both smiling from ear to ear. We looked around as if neither of us had been here before.
“After all of this. We’re finally home.” I said.
“We’re not home until we get to the house.” Jace reminded me. He had already called up a taxi and was getting in. I hopped in after him and we were driven off back to our home. The driver stopped two streets before the thin road leading to the house.
“Why have you stopped? It’s up there.” Jace said.
“This is as far as I go. Weird things have been happening there lately.”
Jace looked at me in disbelief.
“Alright, thankyou.” I said opening he door and getting out. Jace was just behind me. We started to walk and as soon as we were in front of the taxi it screeched off down the road leaving black skid marks on the road.
“What was that about?” I asked Jace.
“I have a bad feeling we’re soon going to find out.” he replied.
We started to walk to the road leading up to the house. As we were walking along it I heard noises in the forest. Rustles, snapping of twigs and I had the weirdest feeling that I was being watched. As we neared the house I saw something on the door.
“What’s that?” I asked. I ran up to it and gasped. On the door were four claw marks in the shape of an M. “Someone really is after me.” I said with a shiver in my voice.
I tried the doorknob but it was locked.
“That’s weird.” Jace said noticing I couldn’t get in. “Mum’s normally here at this time.” “Maybe she needed to go somewhere quickly.” I said reassuringly.
“Maybe.” he replied but he still looked unconvinced. “Follow me.” he said and started to walk around the side of the house. I followed him cautiously. I had a feeling something would pop out suddenly and attack us. But so far nothing did.
We arrived at the back of the house and Jace walked over to what looked like an old wooden hut. A tattered wooden sign hung over the hole that was supposed to be the door reading WELCOME! Jace went inside and I could hear a noise of wood against wood. After a couple of minutes he came back out with a look of desperation on his face. “The spare key is gone, I thought no one would ever find it where I hid it.” He said.
“Well then how are we supposed to get in?” I asked desperately. “We can’t just stay out here, I mean look at us! We look horrible! I mean you with your injured arm and me with half a shirt!”
“Ok, we will find a way in.”
He walked to the back door again and looked at it. There were small squares of glass with wooden planks in between. After he had a good look at it he punched one of the squares and it smashed to pieces.
“What are you doing?!” I yelled at him.
He didn’t say anything but his actions answered my question. He had reached through the hole where the glass was and had flicked the lock that was on the inside.
