My alarm clock began to buzz and with a groan, I reached over to shut it off. I buried myself in my blankets and refused to face the day."Don't you have to get up?" Avi asked besides me with his eyes still shut. I groaned in response. "Come on. You don't want to be late for work." he continued. I didn't say anything. I then felt his foot nudging me towards the edge of the bed.
"I hate you so much." I groaned.
"Love you too." he said smiling. I rolled my eyes and got ready for work. As I was pulling my hoodie over my head, I walked past Lena's room and paused. I didn't know if I should enter or just go about my business. Before I could make the decision for myself, I saw the door swing open.
"Hey." I said weakly.
"Hey" she said back.
"Lena?" I said, but stopped. "Are you okay? Do you want to stay home from work today?" I asked "I could always cover for you and make something up." I offered. Lena smiled at me.
"Thanks, but I'll be okay." she said. "Life is tough, so always wear a helmet." she continued. I wasn't exactly sure what she meant, but that's Lena for you.
"Are you sure L?" I asked. "You've done nothing but be there for me. I just wanted to..." I started but was cut off.
"Stop right there. You're my best friend Erica and I'm always going to be there for you." she said. "Unconditionally. That's what friends do for each other." she told me. I smiled at her words as we both sat down to put on our shoes.
"Hey, Erica." I heard as Avi came through my bedroom door.
"I'll meet you at the elevator." I told Lena as she threw her bag over her shoulder. She nodded at me and left the apartment. "What's up?" I asked. He didn't say anything at first but instead grabbed my hand and stroked my knuckle with his thumb.
"Would you have dinner with me tonight?" he asked. I gave him a puzzled smile.
"Yeah. Of course." I told him. "Is everything okay?" I asked a little worried.
"Yeah, I'm still a little tired." he said. I looked at him. "I'll be fine. Just come back here after work okay?" he said as he kissed my forehead.
"Okay Avi." I said wearily. I pulled my pull-string bag on and left. "That was weird." I thought as I walked to the elevator. I wondered what that was all about. He had seemed fine when I got up. How could he have taken a whole 360 in that short amount of time? I didn't want to entertain the thought, but what if he decided that what I did was too much? My head began to spin a little, but I quickly put it out of mind and put a little more faith in myself. I met up with Lena and my face must've given me away.
"What's wrong?" she asked worried.
"I'm not sure." I said as the elevator doors came to a close.
"Did Avi say something?" she asked.
"Not much." I answered. "He just wants me to come home after work." I finished.
"Then, what's the problem?" She asked. I didn't wan't to say the words I was thinking, but they just kind of fell out of my mouth.
"I think Avi is going to break up with me." I said silently. "I just hope its nothing too soul crushing." I said to myself under my breath knowing that if he did, it would practically destroy me.
I couldn't believe I was actually thinking it, but I was actually dreading dinner with him. I knew that I had decided to be more confident in my relationship, but that little dot did a lot of damage in my mind. My fears had haunted me all day until I heard our troupe leader clap her hands.
