-Jack-
Cindy's mom was more than happy to watch the kids, and she said she'd make some calls to see if they had any other relatives that they might not know about. We told her our location and she said she'd drive over. Blake threw a fit about that.
"If she can drive over here to pick up the kids, why can't she just take us to Chicago? We've been going back and forth, making no progress at all. This is pointless!" he yells this at me, as if it's my fault.
"Um, I'm sorry, but I wasn't even part of this. You dragged me here, this isn't my problem." I cross my arms.
"Let's not fight, boys." Cindy says. The kids are asleep on a blanket on the grass that Cindy set out for them. "My mom can't take us because this is my journey. It's what I have to do on my own. "You promised, Jack! You promised you'd keep up safe." Olivia sobs. I try not to cry. I stroke her hair and give her a hug.
"I am keeping you safe. I can't let you come or else you'll always be in danger. I swear on my life that we'll see each other again someday." I promise, and I seriously hope I can keep that promise.
They cry as they get in the car and then to my surprise, Cindy's mom turns to me.
"Jack, is it?" she asks.
"Yes ma'am." She gives me a hug.
"Thank you for coming with them and keeping them safe." she says, and after saying goodbye to Blake and Cindy, she drives away. I wonder if she meant Cindy and Blake, or the three girls.
"We need to get going. Now." Blake says, and Cindy takes his hand. He kisses her and I shiver, feeling sick to my stomach. Something about him...
