November 2011
The lights dimmed as everyone stopped small talking and headed towards the blue velvet covered seats.
Most people and their dates scurried to find their name printed in cursive along the tags placed on the white lace table clothes that draped over ever table in the building.
Like any 23 year old who just got out of a break up however, I didn't have, need, or exactly want a date. Making this evening the perfect girls night out. Myself and my best friend Laura took our filled to the rim glasses of wine to a table in the very front of the room, directly in front of the main podium for the night.
With my rise to fame after the delights of a heartbreaking yet record shattering album that sugar coated the downfalls of my prior relationship, I had become interested in doing charity work and giving back. My life was miserable but others had it worse and bringing them some joy could maybe shine some my way.
Hence bringing us to tonight, a gala event for a charity called Drop4Drop with a mission statement that fascinated me.
A petite woman in a simple all white pant suit took the mic and introduced a broad shouldered older gentleman. He wasn't exactly what I identified as "my type" since I had a insane case of being a germaphobic. His messy hair and scruffy beard could be a panty dropper to some, but not for me.
As he shook hands with the smaller woman and organized his noted along the podium I went in for my glass of wine and took a big sip.
While doing so my no filtered friend whispered "hottie" in my ear causing me to nearly spit the burgundy liquid all over the unstained perfect cloth that coated our table.
"You're engaged sweetheart, don't let you mind wonder to much. Daniel wouldn't be to pleased with you."
"But you aren't." She said with a small laugh nudging me in the side, leading to me to give her an overdramatic eye roll.
Before I could even reply the man had now began speaking and a raspy deep accent flowed through the speakers of the room. He spoke for quite some time and as I looked around almost every woman in the room seemed to be drooling, besides myself. Sure he had a voice that was pleasing to the ear but I still wasn't interested as much as my friend wanted me to be.
As he closed out his speech the room irrupted into an applause. The lights had came back on and the woman walked back on welcoming everyone to take advantage of the open bar, which I was definitely heading towards.
As I reached the bartender I decided wine was no longer cutting it for me and switched myself to rum and coke. As I took hold of the glass and began to walk back to my seat the familiar voice from earlier rang through my ears.
"That was quite the eye roll earlier. I'm fascinated to hear the story behind it if you have some time. Maybe tomorrow night?" he said while handing me a napkin with a phone number scribbled across.
Before I could even decline he had been pulled of to another group of what seemed to be workers who were suddenly blurting all kinds of pitches his way. His eyes remained focused on me however and he gave me a quick wink, until he then refocused his attention back on those around him.
I began to fold the napkin up placing it in my purse, trying to hide the evidence before Laura could start running her pretty little mind away with thoughts similar to a teenager writing her heart out in her twilight saga fanfiction. But I was half a second to slow.
"Don't try to hide it. I watched it all go down, does this mean after you get over your little hangover tomorrow morning we can go pick out something nice because I can feel it already... someone's getting laid after her dinner date tomorrow night with the hottie himself."
"No need. If I go it would be just friends and I would share how I'm interested in doing what I can to support the charity."
Just Friends...
