The dark circles under Avery's eyes told a story. One of long late nights serving patrons at the bar and wandering the downtown streets home in the early hours. The experience was deflating as each person she passed only looked at her with expressions of sympathy, a blank stare or drunken confusion.
This morning, Avery's heart was almost as heavy as the bag she carried with leaflets. She promised Georgie she would not give up and in the light of day she headed alone to the shopping center. Georgia could not face returning to the place her beloved Cassie went missing, it was too much to bear.
Avery thought it seemed logical to start there, even though the police had assured them they had already canvassed the area. Maybe people would be more comfortable talking to someone who was not uniform. Like a child; she crossed her fingers in hope.
Avery had hated the thought of trying to cover all the mall footprint alone, so she had reached out for reinforcements, yet she remained solo. It seemed odd that Cassie's best friend, Gemmy, considered it too embarrassing to help with the leaflet effort. So far Avery had seen no real input from her in the search.
Gemmy had reacted oddly over the entire disappearance. She hadn't helped to make any phone calls, barely having enough time to talk to Georgia on the phone and now saying it was embarrassing to hand out leaflets. It baffled her.
