"It's Ezra."
"Oh Ezra." She spoke it slowly and almost rolled it around her mouth, tasting it letter by letter.
"What a pretty name, so unusual around here...Well my name is Ritta, but everybody around here calls me momma, and you're welcome to too." She said winking at me.
She moved towards me and gave me a sloppy kiss on my cheek.
"I'm sure you'll love it here, you'll get real acquainted with everybody." She gave me one final wink as she sauntered out of the kitchen.
"Well that's momma for ya, here one minute gone the next." Em took another big chunk of the chocolate and stashed it into her pocket.
"Alrighty then imma show you to your room. We have many a rooms here, almost like a hotel, if ya know what I mean" She winked at me, before hopping off the counter and sashaying out of the kitchen.
She turned us to the left and continued walking down another hall. This house was seeming more and more like I maze, I didn't know how I was ever supposed to find my way around.
"This is my room here Hun, if you e'er need me all ya gotta do is holler." She tapped on a door. We continued walking and two doors down, at what seemed to be the end of the hallway, and she grasped the doorknob in her small hands.
"This here is your room."
I smelled the room before I saw it. It was such a distinct smell. It was pungent and musky, almost as if it hadn't been used in a long time. The room itself was small. There was a small bed in the corner with blankets ontop of it. A dresser and a mirror were pushed up against the adjacent wall. The walls themselves were an almost blood red, but most of it was peeling.
"Alrighty sugar imma leave you in here while I go find you something to wear to sleep. I'm sure you're bought the same size as Kathy, I'll see if I can steal something from her." She left before I could even say anything.
Although I was grateful to be here, being taken care of by these people, something felt wrong. I could feel an uneasiness settling into the pit of my stomache. Maybe it was just being in this new situation, but something felt off, and I couldn't quite place my finger on it.
I paced the room for a few minutes, deep in thought. When the door opened, I almost jumped right out of my skin.
"Oh sorry Hun!" Em giggled "I didn't mean to scare ya, I just got ya some clothes is all." She handed me a pair of purple silky night clothes. I let the material slip through my fingers.
"This doesn't feel like it's going to be very warm." I whispered more to myself than to her.
"You're right it sure ain't, but something's something right? Plus you're gonna need um later, so make sure not to lose um. They're not easy to find ya know." She pulled me into a hug.
"I'm so glad I found you! We're gonna be best friends! I was gettin' kinda lonely 'round here." She pulled me out to arms length. "Well anyways it's bout to get dark and I'm sure you're real tired, so imma leave you. Just remember if you need anything you can come find me." She let me go and turned to leave, but stopped as she opened the door.
"Oh...and the bathroom is the door right between ours, so that's the first door on your left....okay so that's bout it. Night."
I wished her good night and she closed the door, this time for good.
I hadn't realized how tired I was until now. I felt completely exhausted. The past few days had been chaos. I just wished I could remember who I was, it would make things so much easier. I couldn't help wondering if somebody out there was missing me and searching for me.
I quickly changed into the night clothes I had been given, tossing my clothes onto the bed, I would fold those later. Looking down at myself, I felt ridiculous. The shorts felt too short and the tank top barely covered my navel, and as I moved my body, the silkiness felt disgusting. It felt too slippery and smooth, I didn't like it. I tugged at it, wishing I had something more comfortable. I took my hair out of my ponytail and tried to comb through it with my fingers to no avail. I sighed and let it be.
I sighed once more. At least I had something and wasn't sleeping on the streets again.
I resigned to stop feeling sorry for myself and walked over to the only window in the room. I glanced at the almost empty street. Em was right, it was getting dark and quickly too. I could see a few stray animals scampering around. My body sagged against the frame of the window as I glanced up into the night sky, the stars glimmered and shun brightly. There was so much beauty in those stars it was baffling.
While I was staring up at the stars, I began to get the feeling that I was being watched. I slowly brought my gaze back down to the street and sure enough somebody was standing there. Gazing up at me intently.
I recognized him immediately. I'd be mad not to. His golden brown hair shone even in the diming evening light. His blue eyes bore into mine. The scruff around his face more eminent today then it had been yesterday. His masculine face set into a grim expression, though after a few seconds his mouth turned up on one end into a smirk.
In that moment I was snapped out of my entrancement and blushed madly. I felt completely underdressed and quickly spun myself and pressed myself to the wall that was right next to the window. I let out a few ragged breaths.
What was he doing here? Why was I seeing him again? Did he have something to do with my past?
Ugh! I groaned. This was all so difficult. I just wanted to remember. I thumped my head against the wall behind me in frustration.
I needed to see if he was still out there. Even though I know that I shouldn't, every cell in my body was screaming at me to look. I peered out of the window, towards where I had previously seen him.
He wasn't there.
