XXVII. No Words For This

  I knocked on Jasper’s door and he opened it wordlessly, allowing me to enter. “Let me guess,” he said when I came and sat on his couch. “You were with Angelo yet again?”

I didn’t bother to ask how he even knew that. I knew that Taralynn didn’t tell him. When Angelo left, I asked her to leave, saying that I wanted to be alone. Thankfully, she had understood that and left. I knew she wouldn’t tell anyone or even Jasper what had gone on and for that I was grateful. Right now, I needed another friend who could just listen and Jasper was the one.

“I guess it’s that obvious, right?” I said dryly. “He came to my house today.”

"And what did he want?” he asked cautiously, “Or maybe if I intuited right, he wanted you to forgive him. Don’t tell me that you actually fell for it.” When I didn’t answer he swore, “For fuck’s sake you did, didn’t you?”

“Jasper,” I said, in a hurt voice.

“Don’t tell me you’re actually that stupid, Madison? Oh my God, I should have seen it coming. You’re still under his spell after all. The bastard comes crawling and it only takes you a second to believe him, yeah? Well thanks for the circus show, Maddie. You really showed me!”

“You don’t even know what you’re talking about," I snapped angrily. "I never said I was back with him, yes he didn’t come to apologize but we ended it. It’s over, Jasper.”

“But not for you is it?” he demanded harshly. “It’s not over for you. As far as Angelo Tallerico is in the equation, it’ll never be over for you.”

“Stop it!”

“Stop what? Stop telling the truth? Well I can't. You see it as plain as the nose on your face Madison that you’re still in love with him even after all this time. And I’m just a simple fool who believes that one day maybe you’ll fall out of love with him and maybe love me instead.”

My head jerked up to see his face, “What? What do you mean?”

“What do you think I mean?” he asked bitterly. “I’m in love with you Madison. I have been ever since the day you walked into the room and I laid my eyes for you. I’ve been playing the cool, go- with- the flow guy, hoping if I played my cards right, all the times that he fucked up would dawn on you and that you would choose me. There! It’s out in the open and you know the truth!”

I could not deal with this right now. I shook my head from side to side, “No! No, stop it Jasper. You can't be in love with me!”

“Well damn it I am and it's not going to go away just because it isn’t convenient for you!” he shouted angrily.

“Jasper, I can’t do this right now. I need you to be my friend; I don’t want you to do this to us or our friendship.”

“Well, you’ve always needed a lot, haven’t you Madison? But did you ever step out of your world long enough to think about what I needed? You can't tell me that all this time you didn't know? How many other guys do you think would have put up with your worshipping Angelo? Did you even once consider my feelings? I mean whenever he hurts you, you come to me. You go away to an island with me, you bloody make out with me, you let me hold you, you sleep over at my place, and you tell me you need me, what do you fucking want from me, Madison Shepherd because frankly I am tired of all the games!”
