I walk by Hiccup's room. It's been a few days since the story, and he hasn't come out since. Not even for food. Toothless never strays too far from his door for too long either. He's worried too.
Toothless and I are getting along only for the sake of Hiccup though. We can both feel the urge to claim the Top Alpha title. But we know it would tear Hiccup apart if one of us got hurt, and if we didn't get along. Hopefully, when I change back, Toothless and I will have no more problems.
Toothless nods stiffly at me when I claw at Hiccup's door, hoping to at least hear from him this time. Every other time I've come to check on him, I hear nothing.
I'm really worried.
I claw some more at the door, this time harder. Over the past few days, claw marks have been developing on the door from where I've scratched at it. I'll fix it when I change back.
'Hiccup?' I try. This is the first time I've tried talking to him, not sure if my telepathic voice can travel through doors. Not sure if he'd even want to hear from me.
I sigh through my nose and try again. 'Hiccup?' I sing the rest to the tune of a song mom used to sing to us to get us to sleep in those stormy nights that I'd climb into Hiccup's bed.
'Please, I know you're in there. The others are asking how you've been. They say have courage, and I'm trying to, I'm right out here for you, just let me in.' I sniffle. 'I've only ever had you, it was just you and me. What have I got to do?' I lean my forehead against the door as tears start to gather in my eyes.
'Do you want to build a snowman?' My voice breaks even in my head and I sniffle some more. A tear falls from my eye, freezing halfway down my cheek. I lick it away.
For a few moments there's no answer. No noise. Nothing. I hang my head sadly before walking away, tail between my legs.
I didn't know he tore himself up this much about me leaving. I just wanted him to be happy. I never wanted to hurt him. I love him. All I've ever wanted for ham was to be happy and free. Something I know he'd never have been able to be with me around.
So why is he so upset?
My ears prick up when I hear a click of a doorknob opening. I snap around to see Hiccup standing outside the door, Toothless sitting up, high and alert, staring straight at Hiccup while he runs his hands under Toothless's jaw.
All the while attempting to look up at me.
I stop walking, sitting down right where I am, waiting for him to make the first move. I don't want to scare him back into the room.
Finally he meets my eyes, but only for a few seconds. "Hey."
My claws dig into the ice beneath me. "Hey? You lock yourself in your room for days, not even coming out to eat, letting all of us worry about you because of a simple story, and you say hey?"
He snaps. "Well what did you expect? I just got you back and you tell me that you want to be just like some 1800s Ice Queen who was assassinated? Honestly Elsa, its like you're trying to leave me!" his voice breaks.
I back down, tail between my legs. "That wasn't what I was saying, you have to know that. I never wanted to leave you or mom and dad. I just wanted you to be happy. That's all I've ever wanted. I never meant to hurt anyone! I don't want to do that..."
His face softens. "I know. But it's my job to protect you. And i'm happy with you. You're my sister! I love you! I always have and I always will. Nothing will ever change that. So you have to let me in! I can't protect you if I don't know what to protect you from!"
