Dear Best Friend

To my best friend,
My true soulmate,
My warrior,
Our battles were never faced alone.
I'd laugh at your insecurities
And you'd laugh at mine
But you were my rock,
My only supporter.

We were unconditional
And you promised you'd stay,
Until friendship bloomed into more
And we considered the possibilities.
You carried your emotions through the years
In your mind, clinging to the idea of us,
But I didn't feel the same
And I didn't want to hurt you.

Dates with the new guy
Have pushed you away
And my rock has slowly eroded
To nothing more than sand.
The rope I tied around you
To hold me stable
Has fast become a noose
Which I am holding around my neck.

When did friendship become so difficult?
When did friendship become so lost?
When did 'one and only' start to mean love?
Why did you become so distant?
Why does it have to be you or them?
Why do I have to lose you when you're all I have?
