Karkat refused to call it crying. He wasn't. Tears had welled up in his eyes, but they hadn't spilled down his cheeks yet, so he wasn't crying.

"I'm fine, shitstain," Karkat snapped, not meeting to Dave's gaze and rubbing his eyes furiously. "I-I just don't understand why you'd want to fucking stay with me," Karkat wondered aloud.

"I've done nothing but call you all these horrible names and snap at you. Wh-Why do you like me at all?" He still couldn't look at Dave's face, focusing on Dave's shoes like they were the most interesting thing in the world. Wait, had Dave gotten closer to him? And his hand was on Karkat's shoulder... His stomach flipped over, even though he willed it to stop. However, Karkat surprisingly didn't shrink away from Dave's touch. Even though a sensible part of him screamed for him to get away.

Dave didn't understand why he hadn't left himself. Karkat was completely hostile toward him most of the time and called him names that could end up in a huge fight. Yet here he stayed, now admitting that he wanted to be company all the time. That he didn't want to leave him alone in these forever dark caves.

"Yeah. You've been acting like a lil shit towards me, but it's gonna take more than names to make me leave." Dave looked at the monster before him. He couldn't peace much of why he enjoyed company like this, despite how it came and acted. And appeared. "I don't know really, I guess it's something about you.." Dave trailed off. He sounded stupid as hell but it was the truth. He couldn't put his finger on it no matter how obvious and close it was to him.

Dave wanted to mentally slap himself for how corny he could've put his words together. He was also surprised Karkat hadn't backhand slapped him for touching the merchandise, even when it was expected it never came.

"Why do you like me?"

Karkat avoided his question by addressing Dave's answer, "What?" He demanded, crossing arms. "What in the name of sweet globe tickling fuck made you like me? I'm still a monster to you fucking humans. Monsters killed your fucking brother! You should fucking hate me!" Karkat still couldn't bring himself to look at Dave's face, opting a glare instead at his feet. Then the anger just melted away, leeched out of him.

"Wh-why? No one ever—" Karkat stammered, a translucent red tear trailing down his cheek.

"I-I don't understand." He buried his face in his hands, trying to hide his tears. Dave didn't need to see him vulnerable state like that this. Karkat didn't want Dave to see him like this. He'd probably realize what a weakling Karkat was and abandon him. He couldn't believe he allowed himself to cry in front of this– this human, this stranger, this –dare to think it– friend.

Dave soon felt guilt in his chest. He didn't mean to bring him to this state of confusion. His arm slowly let lose to his sides, his face contorted into a worry state behind his shades. His mouth making a small gap as a red translucent tear rolled down the others face. The miner meant no harm to his navigation; to hell with it, his friend. He didn't mean to upset his friend. Though Karkat had his point, why didn't he have his overwhelming hatred towards all monsters. He was related to the things that killed his brother; and to the simple fact of. He is a monster and himself a human.

"You're not the one to blame. Why keep a grudge on monster who weren't even a witness to his bro's death." Dave started with a dull voice, shut his eyes and opening them again. "Karkat, the reason why I like you because you're fucking strong. Everyone dissed you, they hated you, they tried to kill you. You weren't welcomed anywhere but here; alone. But here you are, still standing." He then stopped and fixed on Karkat's words, a question popped in his head. He'd leave it for later, for now he wished to fix his friends upset mood. To help the friend he had made in the caves.

"Please don't cry." Dave almost said in a whisper. He never remembered being in such a soft manner for a long while, and never had he been so up close to a monster without a weapon in hand. Though not it mattered at the time, he just wanted to help now.

Karkat kept his face hidden during Dave's speech; though he was elated that someone, even a human, actually liked him. He looked up when Dave asked him to stop crying, sniffled, and rubbed his eyes one last time. He finally worked up the courage to meet Dave's eyes or rather sunglasses. "Th-thanks," Karkat said softly.

What Dave had said really boosted his nearly nonexistent self-esteem. "And you're pretty fucking nice for a human and all."

A/N:
I'm very happy to see all your happy and excited comments.
Very sorry that I have been taking awhile, but I do have a surprise coming up.
It will take more writing time but I'm very sure you'll all enjoy it.
Perhaps till the beginning of summer? I'm even stretching my before time limit, shame.
But having shorter chapters than my regular chapters makes it easier and you guys don't seem to mind. So just until the beginning of summer, maybe even before.
Then we can talk about your surprises. Until then see you on the other side. :)
