A week later and the petite girl was back at school. Her hands trembled in the pockets of her forest green hoodie. She took a few deep breaths before walking into the building, Lafayette by her side. They gave her a warm smile. "You will be fine mon sœur! And if you need me, you have my timetable, just come to my class. George and Martha already explained everything to the professors."
Alex gave a weak smile in return. "Y-yeah......Okay."
Two hours into the school day she had her first class with Tamsin Jefferson, Debates.
She had seen Jefferson enter the classroom and steeled her nerves before doing the same. She took a seat next to a girl named Charity Lee. Alex gave the girl a nervous smile. "P-pardon me, I'm Alexandria H-Hamilton, who a-are you?"
Lee gave her a smug look, "Charity, Charity Lee. You seem tense kid, relax. It's only Debate class."
Alex frowned softly, quickly deciding she didn't like Charity Lee. Despite that she bit her tongue, Lee's whole look screamed, 'I'm rich and popular, disrespect me and you're dead.' The islander swallowed thickly and gave a nod. "Y-yeah, just d-debate class."
Lee chuckled, "Y'know kid, you don't seem half bad. I could fix you up a bit, make you look like less of a dweeb." She gesture to the Sherlock t-shirt and jeans Alex was wearing. "Maybe do your hair a bit better." Her eyes flicked to the messy bun her rusty red hair was in.
Alex bit her bottom lip. "D-do I really look that bad?"
"Like a hot mess sweetpea."
Alex tugged at the bottom of her shirt self-consciously. She was pulled out of thoughts and conversation as the teacher announced, "Thomasina Jefferson and Alexandria Hamilton have the first debate."
Lee snickered, "she hates her full name."
Alex gulped and made her way to the two podiums in the front of the room.
Tamsin scowled at the teacher before doing the same.
The teacher gave Tamsin a blank look before telling them the topic. "The two off you will be debating whether or not immigrant children should be deported with their parents or put in the foster care system. Thomasina, you will be argue for deportation, Alexandria, you will argue for the foster system."
Tamsin gave a smirk and began the debate, "we already have so many children in the foster care system! We can't afford anymore! You know who pays for those unwanted kids? The taxpayers! They pay for the mistakes of people who didn't wear condoms or take a birth-control pill!" She didn't hold back, the fact that Alex was a foster child herself slipped the older girl's mind.
Alex scowled, "not everyone was born with a silver spoon in their mouth! Not everyone was born in a first world country and has access to even the simplest necessities! You talk as though children in the foster care system are a personal burden to you. Not to mention the immigrant children are here to make something of themselves. We don't have family names or reputations to hide behind like you do! We have to work hard for what we have! Pull your head out of your ass Thomasina, It's not a hat."
The entire room went dead silent, no one had expected the timid little new girl to actually argue with Tamsin.
The Virginian gritted her teeth. "You little twerp. Immigrants come in and breed like flies and steal jobs and use up government money. They don't belong here."
Alex turned red, "We belong here as much as you do! We are human too!"
Tamsin huffed, "I refuse to debate with someone so disastrously idiotic." She sat back in her seat and Alex sneered, "at least I'm not childishly petty."
