"I hope you're right and this plan is going to work because otherwise, we're gonna get a big beating for this.

"Don't worry, I  checked my calculations every minute I got. I don't see a single flaw in this. We are going to get out. We are going to be safe".

"Let's just hope so. You told everyone when and where to meet, right?".

"Yep, the room across the hall from our sleeping areas, two o'clock".

We were going to escape this lab they locked us in. We'll be free from this nightmare we've lived in since birth in only a little more time.

We are going to be free.

We-Steven and I- were hiding in our secret room with the lights off. He had a device in his hand that I couldn't see, but knew was there.

We were waiting for everyone else we trusted to meet us here so we could teleport and escape this wicked, evil place.

Of course, there were the kids we couldn't trust who would give us away the moment they knew we were up to something to get rewarded from our masters so we had to keep this a strict secret.

We are being kept here by scientists. Evil scientists who genetically modified lab-born children (us) to be improved. Not super strength or anything, they wanted mind power. They improved our brains capabilities to become scientific prodigies. We were made to be their workers, their slaves so they didn't have to do the work themselves. That's business for you.

We didn't like it, none of the other kids do but some are too scared or paranoid to try and escape, so it's just us seven.

It was Steven and I who came up with this plan. Wait, no, actually I came up with the idea, Steven helped by designing and building the device, Kayla corrected the planning mistakes.

Our plan is for our group to sneak where we are, then use the teleportation device to get out of this lab and into the real world.

The teleportation device will, as you guessed, teleport us to a destination of our choosing. However, to get the signal through to everyone we have to have a physical contact such as holding hands or linking arms. The person will only be teleported as long as they are touching someone who is linked to the device.

Steven is going to teleport us to a place we discovered called "Seattle". We were searching for places to escape to from books in our library and Seattle seemed a good fit. (Just don't tell the masters, we can't be discovered, shhhh).

Wait, I think I hear footsteps, by the door. Quiet, but definitely audible, I wouldn't hear them otherwise. For sure a couple of people.

"That must be them", I whispered to Steven.  As if in response, the door opened and four kids snuck into the room, still quiet.

There were supposed to be five.

Once the door was closed, Steven whispered "Okay, who in all is here, we need to make sure we have everyone before we leave".   He must not have counted or saw the four people.

"I'm here, Sandrea".

"Kayla over here".

"Catrina, Jeff's right here".

Oh no. Why does Maria have to be missing? I can't leave without her.

We never had true families due to us being born in a lab, but some of us bonded with each other into a sibling kind of relationship. Well, Maria was like my little sister. She was only four years old, yet, we still shared a connection.

She was most of what I had in life, her being my sister and Steven being my best friend, I couldn't stand to lose either one of them.

Yet she was missing.

Would she even show up? I told her to meet us here right? Of course I did, I remember doing so. Where was she then? She was so eager to escape, surely she wouldn't miss this opportunity.

Would she?

Maybe it was too much for her. She might not have wanted to leave. But wouldn't she have told me if she didn't want to leave? Why wouldn't she want to leave?

As these thoughts and worries were buzzing in my head, Steven was checking the device to make sure it was ready. He wouldn't leave her would he?

"We need to go soon or they might find out what we're doing", Jeff whispered.

Steven's device lit up and the room grew bright.

"Oops", he said.

While the room was illuminated, I saw concern on Sandrea's face. Her bright red hair and blue eyes were noticeable from anywhere in the room.

"We have to get Maria", she whispered.

"We can't search for her, it's too risky, we're lucky we've gotten this far", Kayla whispered back.

Steven was staring at his computer next to the device. He was concentrating on something, probably some last minute calculations. But he had a worried look on his face.

This was not going well so far.

"Guys, we have to hurry", Steven said.

"Why?" I asked.

Boots started stomping outside, flashlights shone in from under the door.

"That's why, we have a traitor", he said. He was starting the machine as fast as he could.

"Wait, what do you mean traitor? Nobody else knows this plan", I stated.

He turned the computer screen toward me. It showed security cameras of the building, the timing on them read "2:00".

Five minutes ago.

Camera nine had Maria on it, speaking to one of the leaders.

"No! She would never turn us in!"I said loudly.

"Shut up Henry, you just gave away out location!", Catrina stated.

"But she would never betray us!" I said a little quieter, not much though.

More flashlights shone near our door, men were trying to break down the locked door.

"I have the machine booted up! Hurry, link arms, hold hands, something! We have no time left" Steven said urgently.

He was packing up his equipment, and setting up the device as we linked arms and hands.

I grabbed Jeff's hand and Kayla's right as the door bust down.

"GET THEM!" the closest guard shouted.

"I've got the machine! We're teleporting now!"

The room got darker in my vision as my photons were shifted someplace else. There was no pain, thankfully, but I passed out during the trip as you always do.

The only thoughts in my mind were no, she would never betray us. Or she was my sister, she wouldn't do this.

Steven had to be wrong, right?
