Young Love

You’ve heard this before,

It must be getting old,

But for the sake of storytelling,

It has to be told.

When I was just a girl,

I knew nothing of love,

It was foreign to me,

Unheard of.

 '

So when this young boy,

Gave me gifts and flowers,

I knew not what to do,

So I ran off like a coward.

It took some time,

And a lot of learning,

But I talked to the boy,

And it got my stomach churning.

I was just a child,

Unaware of pain,

But all this affection,

Left me insane.

So I fell deep in love,

I fell hard, I’d say,

So I was not prepared

For one spring day.

I thought we were good,

I thought that we’d last

But now all those hopes

Are lost in the past.

For he was taking it slow,

And I wanted a change,

But that kind of love

Was beyond his range.

So I left him behind,

Alone in the dust.

Left in the cold,

Outside to rust.

I went all around,

Changing day to day,

But all that it did

Was make my love fray.

It took me a while,

And a whole lot of thought

Before I realized

What I forgot.

For that boy was the one

Who had taught,

Never in your life,

To let your love rot.

So I came back,

Hoping for redemption,

But all that I found

Was bitter rejection.

For when I was gone,

My hopes being shattered,

I had helped him realize,

What really mattered.

So when I returned,

One spring day,

All his love for me,

Had melted away.

He had found a girl,

Who really made him happy,

She really loved him,

Without being snappy.

It’s been a few years,

And I’ve grown since then,

But all I can think of,

Is what could have been.
