Person A and B are both immensely powerful beings. Born to opposing royalty.
Person B takes over A's civilization and forces A's people into submission. B falls in love with A due to their kind attitude, although it is not reciprocated (for obvious reasons).
B keeps trying to woo A but fails until A finally accepts. B is overjoyed (oblivious to the fact that A is only doing so to assassinate B)
A does fall in love with B and ends up tearfully ending B.
In the end, after their home is won back, they kill themselves in the same bed that B was killed.
(*this could have a huge theme of Stockholm syndrome if you wish, to add a little bit of sprinkle to the depression cake)
