Soon after returning to the shop, Dom discreetly called me into his office. I was a little intrigued when he instructed me to close and lock the door behind me. He instructed me to sit down and I did so on a small rolling chair opposite him.
"Jeff, I suspect that you're wondering why the secrecy here," he said to me. "You've proven to me that you're a trustworthy individual. I have to ask though just how far are you willing to push life?"
Taken slightly aback by this question I paused and thought for a moment before responding, "As far as I possibly can."
"Good. I want to make a proposition to you. I have a certain method for earning the money to do what we do. Honestly it takes more than just a few tune ups and oil changes to keep those cars running. I'm sure you know that. What I'm offering you is a chance to be part of a specialized team. If you are interested we have a place for you. If not then this conversation never happened. What do you say?"
The way Dom was talking made me suspect that this team may have been slightly illegal. However I knew that I was already in pretty far as it was so I figured to heck with it. "I'd be honored to be part of your team. Tell me what does this team do?"
"We hijack trucks hauling valuables and sell the contents at reasonable prices. It's easy money and usually not to dangerous," he responded.
"Alright. When do we begin?"
"Our next hit is tonight while Brian and Mia are out."
"Speaking of which, why have you dealt me in on this and not Brian?" I asked.
"Because there's still something that feels off about the guy. I can't put my finger on it yet. You on the other hand I saw how you handled that business at Hector's and Tran's the other night. You have what it takes. I don't know about him yet."
By that time it was quitting time and we all headed home. Soon after dark Brian and Mia headed out for the night. No sooner had they left we hit the road too. We drove for a couple of hours during which I dosed off once or twice. When I came to we where out in the desert next to some abandoned structure. Three Honda Civics sat there just out of sight from the road.
We got out and Dom spoke to the rest of us, "Alright guys let's get this done before sunrise. Baker you ride with Leon as backup. Keep on the scanners for any reports. Mostly your here to observe things and see how it's done for tonight ok?"
"Roger that," I responded.
We all loaded into the cars. Vince and Dom the lead car, Letty and Jesse in the second, and Leon and myself in the last. We drove back towards the city. Tired as I was before there was no way I was falling back asleep now.
We hit the free way and found our target.
"Alright, go time!" Came Dominic's voice of the walkie talkie.
"Ever done anything like this before, Jeff?" asked Leon.
"Not in anything that moved this fast," I responded.
That's when we attacked the truck. I had to hand it to them. The way the team hit it would've made a lot of special forces units proud. Letty and Jesse took the lead. Someone, presumably Jesse as last I knew Letty was driving but I couldn't tell because whomever it was had a motorcycle helmet on and of course it was still dark, stood up out of the skylight and fired a harpoon gun into the passenger windshield. Jesse pulled back on the line and the glass fell onto the free way where it shattered into a million pieces and was soon long out of sight.
Letty and Jesse moved out of the way and Dom and Vince got in front of the truck. The driver tried to take evasive action but Dom was able to keep up with him. As was with Jesse and Letty, Vince (at least I think it was Vince) crawled out the skylight with a harpoon gun. He fired it into the now open passenger side of the truck where it hit something solid. Dom slowed down to bring them nearer to the truck and Vince jumped out onto the hood of the semi. That guy had some serious balls. The trucker tried to shake him off but it was no use. Vince crawled into the passenger seat. The trucker wasn't giving up without a fight. He swung wildly at Vince trying to throw him out. Vince managed to subdue him by firing a taser into his chest. The poor man stopped fighting. Vince pulled him into the passenger seat and sat in the driver's seat. The truck was ours!
We left the trucker unconscious on the side of the freeway. Dom told me he would be okay but would probably have a pretty bad headache come morning. We offloaded the truck into a storage unit somewhere in the middle of the city.
We hid the Civics back in the desert and where back in town just as the sun was coming over the horizon. We all high fived each other on a successful run before crashing in various places in the house. The last thing I remembered was laying on the couch thinking to myself that these guys were nuts. But I sure was glad to be rolling with them.
