We didn't make any more runs for some time after that night. How could we when we where trying to prepare ourselves for the upcoming Race Wars? My car was more than ready to be let loose. Brian was still working on his Supra but it was coming along rather nicely.
One morning a week before the big event we put the final touches on the beautiful car that we helped Brian rebuild. Brian hopped into the driver's seat and Dom took the shotgun. Dom asked me to drive along behind them in case for some reason they had trouble. Brian turned the ignition and the orange beauty roared into life. Everyone smiled from ear to ear. Jesse patted the hood lovingly.
"Are you ready for this trophy?" asked Letty.
Brian hit the accelerator and tore out the door. I sprinted to the Charger and did my best to catch them. We shot through the streets of Los Angeles like two wild horses on the plains. Clearly there was nothing wrong with that car. It went through the gears with ease and listening to it was like listening to Heavy Metal before bed.
After a while we decided to go grab a bite at a seafood joint Dom knew about by the beach. We rolled up on an intersection and a black Ferrari cut me off to come up beside Brian and Dom. It was hard to hear what went on in front of me but I think the conversation went like this.
"Hey, nice car. What's the retail on one of those?" asked Brian.
"More than you can afford pal. Ferrari," said the driver of the black car.
It became apparent to me that this was turning into a showdown. Bot drivers revved there engines. The light turned green and the two cars shot off the line with me right behind them. The race soon exceeded the speed limit and we came upon some cars ahead of us. The Ferrari veered right while Brian and Dom shot left into the oncoming lane. I followed the Ferrari but was faster than him in getting back into our original lane. I threw him the finger as I blew past him as Brian and Dom came up beside me laughing at our victory over the clearly rich brat.
We pulled into a little seaside cafe and all ordered shrimp. Brian was oddly quiet giving our recent win.
Finally Dom broke the silence, "So what's wrong Brian?"
"Nothing man. I'm fine."
"Come on. Obviously something's off," Dom started to sound a little concerned.
"Look, I have my good days and I have my bad just like everyone else," Brian was sounding almost defensive now.
"Don't lose that cool of yours. That's your meal ticket."
"What I can't pay for my own shrimp?"
"I got the shrimp."
"Well hey if I'd known that I would've gotten a bigger size," I said jokingly. The look Dom gave me shut me up.
"No that's one thing you don't understand about me. I don't take handouts I don't need handouts. I earn my way every step. Just gotta make a little something extra on the side like you," responded Brian.
Dom glanced at me the said to Brian, "What do you mean like me? What's that supposed to mean?"
"That's what I mean," said Brian.
"What does that mean like me?" asked Dom again.
"I'm not stupid! Alright? I know there's no way in hell you payed for all that shit you got under the hood..."
Dom gestured to him to lower his voice.
"I know there's no way in hell you payed for all that shit that's under the hood of those cars by doing tune ups and selling groceries. Now whatever it is your in on I want in on it too," Brian continued in a softer voice.
Dom looked at Brian for a bit then looked at me. I shrugged and he looked back at Brian. Without taking his eyes off him Dom reached into his pocket and handed Brain a folded piece of paper.
"What's this," Brian asked.
"Directions," Dom said, "To race wars. We'll see how you do. Then we'll talk.
