Almost everyone was gone when I knocked on the door of Torreto house. Mia opened it and let me in.
"Hello Jeff. Dom told me you would be staying with us for a little while. I'll show you to your room."
She led me up the stairs and into a bedroom overlooking the back yard.
"Here's your room. Dom wants everyone to be at the shop at eight. Breakfast is at six, you can help yourself to the fridge in the meantime. Need something you can just ask I'm in the room down the hall.
I thank her and she left probably back downstairs. I shut the door and laid down on the bed which was a lot more comfortable than the one I had slept in at the motel or even the backseat of my Charger for that matter.
Didn't take me long to fall asleep. The adrenaline from the race had finally left and I was able to settle down.
Next thing I knew an alarm clock was screaming in my ear. I jumpeOd up, looking around for the cause of the commotion. Turned out it was whoever was in the room next to mine. Oh well probably time to get up anyway. I dressed myself and made my way down the stairs and into the kitchen. Almost everyone from Dom's group was there. Dom got up and introduced me to the table. There was Letty, Leon, Vince, and the kid's name was Jesse. Everyone that I hadn't already met got up, shook my hand and welcomed me to the family. I sat at an empty seat between Leon and Mia. Breakfast consisted of a huge meal. Eggs, Bacon, oatmeal, cereal, toast, even homemade donuts. There was a lot more food there than I was used to seeing on a breakfast table. Everyone was talking about the events that went down the previous night. Dom was telling us that he had been running from a cop cruiser when the blonde guy, who I found out was named Brian Spilner, rolled up in and and told him to get in. Brian proved his worth by outrunning the police but then they ended up on the wrong side of town and an Asian street gang led by a guy named Johnny Tran and another guy called lance rolled up on them and escorted them to the back of some Asian restaurant. Words were exchanged and Tran and Lance fired on the car igniting the Nos and subsequently blew up Brian's car.
"So that's why it took you longer getting back," Said Leon.
"Wouldn't have taken so long if you guys would have shown up like we had agreed on," Grunted Dom.
"Yes, but now that's over and done with," Said Mia.
No one else really spoke much after that. After clearing the table of every last edible crumb, we headed out to the cars and prepared to head to Dom's garage. Seeing that I had two cars parked in the street Dom said to me, "Why don't you bring that Mustang and follow me. I'll show you a safe spot to leave your cars if you start bringing in any more."
I hopped into the Mustang and Dom and Vince jumped into Vince's Nissan and we drove out of there. I followed Dom and Vince back to the warehouse district where they made a hard turn into what looked like was once an abandoned parking garage.
Dom's Rx-7 was parked in one corner while a tool box and work bench was tucked in another. I parked my car and got out.
Dom and Vince walked over to me.
"Any car that there isn't room for in the driveway you can bring here. This building is completely secure so no one will mess with them. Plus it doubles as a nice work space. I come here to clear my head at times," said Dom.
"I don't get it. You've known me for less than a week and yet you've allowed me into your family. What makes me different from that Spilner guy you guys seem to dislike so much?"
"Because Chris vouched for you. He's a pretty good judge of character even if he tends to be unpredictable. Brian on the other hand just showed up a few weeks back and started working for Harry down at the Racer's Edge. There's just something about him that I can't figure out. You on the other hand, you probably grew up in the Midwest. Family values was probably instilled on you at an early age. Plus you're probably running from something in your past which is how you came to be out here. How am I doing so far?"
"Bought nailed it."
"Of course I did. Now come on we got to get to work."
I crawled into the back seat of the Nissan and we headed off to Dom's store. Everyone else was already there. Dom set me to work rebuilding an exhaust manifold while Mia came up to him with some paperwork in her hand.
"Hey Dom, we need to go over these."
"What do you got there Mia?"
"This was in the mailbox this morning."
He looked at the papers and shook his head. "Hold off on them."
"Dom!" Mia exclaimed, "I don't know what to do with this."
Just then someone backed up a trailer containing a completely totaled Toyota Supra.
"What in the world?" I muttered under my breath.
Everybody wandered over.
"What the hell is this?" Asked Dom as Brian Spilner walked in. "What do you got there?"
Brian gestured to the wreck with a mischievous grin, "This is your car."
"My car?" Said Dom as Jesse walked up and punched the front fender questioningly. "I said a ten second car not a ten minute car."
"You could push this across the finish line maybe or tow it," said Jesse.
Letty and I both let out a burst of laughter, Mia grinned.
"You couldn't even tow it across the finish line," Said Dom.
Brian got a frustrated look on his face, "No faith."
"Oh, I have faith in you but this isn't a junkyard this is a garage," Dom responded.
"Hey pop the hood."
"Pop the hood?"
"Pop the hood."
Jesse and I pulled the hood off which promptly came off its hinges.
"Two J Z engine, no shit," said Jesse.
"What did I tell you," Said Brian.
"I retract my previous statement," Said Dom.
"You know what, this will decimate all if you put about fifteen grand in it or more if we have to wit overnight parts from Japan." Said Jesse.
"Well put it on my tab at Harry's, Said Dom. He turned to Brian, "I got to get you racing so I can make some money off your ass. There's a show down in the desert called Race Wars and that's where you'll do it. I'll tell you what when you're not working at Harry's your working in here. If you can't find the right tools in this Garage mister Arizona, you don't belong near a car."
Mia walked over to Brian, "He owns you now."
I went back to my exhaust manifold. Brian began to work on his wreck of a car that he seemed to think he was going to get racing. Vince and Leon wandered off to god knew where. We spent that entire morning working in there. Not that I minded one bit. I always liked working on cars. Just something about Brian was making me uneasy. Maybe it was what Dom and Vince had told me that morning, or maybe it was something else. I didn't know. What I did know was these people had been kind enough to allow me into their family and if they didn't trust him then I didn't trust him. And with that being the case I was going to watch him as closely as everyone else.
