“OPEN THE DOOR, RIO!” Nathaniel booms again, hammering at the door like a police officer. My heart quivers at the sound of his voice, his presence reawakening the dormant part of it –the part that loves him too much for me to be sensible. He’s yelling at me but at this moment, I don’t care. I know it makes no sense but I am so happy that he is here. Deny it as I may, I miss him like the desert misses the rain, and it pains me to have to conceal my elation for the sake of keeping up appearances. Every time I see him, no matter how briefly, I always feel like this –like I belong to him.
Sigh.
If I allow myself to indulge in my emotions, I will end up right back where I started –entangled in his arms, allowing him to perform his every sexual whim on my anatomy, his soulful moans encouraging me to confess my affections over and over till my throat burns with my eternal love letter. After all of that, somehow my hedonistic love story will end with the same tragic fashion it always does; alone.
Will I ever learn?
Nathaniel is standing on the other side of the door, screaming at me so he can defend Georgia; I hate him.
And I love him.
And I hate that I love him.
“I WANT CARTER,” I yell back.
The hammering stops.
“Carter?” he asks with disgusted disbelief. I can picture his face; jaw clenched with that tiny muscle flickering like a candle in the wind, eyebrows knotted together, and his bright eyes turning dark and daunting as the tornado of anger swirls inside his irises.
I’m afraid to open the door; not because I’m scared of what will happen when I do, but because of the overwhelming feeling of adoration I get whenever I see him that puts my memories of his beauty to shame. I need Carter with me to keep me focused.
“Yes. Where is he?”
There is a scuffle and a gush of loud murmurs. The music is turned off as the Unfamous now catch wind of the situation. I have made us the main attraction of Jade Washington’s party. I am dreading looking at my iPhone, which is jingling sporadically, alerting me that Twitter is on fire. Shit! All of the people with tons of followers are crammed into this dorm, everyone’s going to know my business and judge me publically. Once these kinds of stories make it onto Twitter, they spread far and wide. If no one was sure of who I was before, they will know tonight.
“Why do you want Carter?” Georgia asks warily, finding the strength to get to her feet again. This time she stands without holding the sink. Funny how as soon as she hears that her ex is being brought into the situation she isn’t all ‘woe is me, I’m pregnant’ anymore. The risk of being caught in a lie has miraculous effects.
“You’ll see,” I reply icily.
I’m not sure if it is anxiety or fear, but something is in Georgia’s eyes that I have never seen before and it only makes me want to see my campaign through till the end all the more. So my name will be blasted across Twitter *shrug* at least I will finally get my own back.
“Princess?” Carter’s voice seeps through softly with concern, “You okay?” he asks.
Georgia tenses up and I feel myself relax a little.
“Yeah, I’m okay.”
“Rio, what the fuck is going on? Open the door!” Nathaniel cuts in, sounding even more wound up than before. He does not like me associating with Carter one little bit. Yeah well, I don’t like you associating with whores’ either but you don’t listen to me, so go ahead and be upset. Maybe you’ll finally realise what you put me through every time I see you with her.
