We reached home.
My dad stepped out. "Ah! It's good to be back.."
My mom, Vanitha was waiting by the threshold, ready to welcome him.
Now is the time, you would expect them to hug, say a few nice words and all that romantic stuff, but no. My parents don't display affection.
Mom came forward to take the luggage. My brother, Varun came rushing out of the house to see our dad. He barreled past me into his arms.
"Hey! How are you, wow, you've grown!" We went into the house catching up on all the months we missed.
And so my story begins......
-----------------------
We were riding in a car, with the top down and the wind combing my hair. I sat up in my seat and put my arms out, laughing out in delight.
Yup just like the heroines do in the movie.
Beside me, my fiance was looking up at me with love in his eyes. He proposed to me a few days back and I've been the happiest girl on earth since then.
"Look at the road!" I swatted his arm playfully. "I don't want to die young!"
He laughed and parked the car by the road side.
"Why did we stop???"
His only answer was sweeping my on to his lap, leaning me against the steering wheel and kissing me hard. I smiled against his lip. Bliss...
Triiiiiiiiiiiing!
The alarm blared, waking me from the wonderful dream.
I moaned in frustration, trying to go back to sleep but it was no good, I was awake.
Urgh! I got up to get ready for work. I was a doctor and part time professor at AIIMS, one of the most prestigious institutes in India. How I ended up there is a story for another time.
Right now, I was running late, as usual I spent too much time in the bathroom!
I ran down the stairs and sat at the dining table. "Ma, breakfast! It's time for work!" I hollered.
She came in, carrying the dishes and placing them on the table.
" You've grown older in appearance is all. Still a child. " She grumbled, placing three idllis on my plate.
I ate the food reluctantly. You see, I hate eating most of the time, probably because ofall the work involved in chewing and swallowing. I don't know, but I've never really had an appetite. Eating is more like a duty for me.
My mom just shook her head and sighed, she's used to it by now. She stood near the kitchen counter, waiting for the first sound of me retching.
As expected, it came after I ate my first idlli. I stood up and went over to the basin, dry heaving.
This was the usual morning ritual. Yup, a great way to start the day.
I grabbed my handbag and rushed out of the house. "Bye ma! Bye daddy! Bye bro!" I shouted as I got onto the car.
Off to work. Little did I know that that day was going to change me forever......
