Chapter Seventeen
I got off of my plane. I was now in New York. Ben was still in London. We promised to call each other every day. We would make this work. I wanted this to work.
I went to baggage claim and grabbed my two suitcases. There was suppose to be someone waiting to pick me up. I still can't believe that in actually here-in New York, going to Juilliard.
I took a deep breath. I pulled my phone from my pocket and turned it on. I would text Ben when I got to campus.
I looked for a sign with my name on it. I scanned the crowd. I saw a sign that said, "Evanston."
No turning back now...
***
Just got to my dorm. I love you.
I texted Ben as I set my bags down. I hadn't seen my roommate yet. I hadn't really seen anyone yet.
I sat down on the bed on the left side of the room. My phone buzzed. I was positive it was from Ben.
Glad to hear from you, I love you too.
I smiled like an idiot.
"What's got you so happy?" A heavy German accent filled my ears. I looked up to see a girl with thick, brown hair and green eyes. I assume she's my roommate.
"Just my boyfriend." I got off my bed and stick I out my hand, offering a shake, "I'm Emerald."
"Annette. Nice to meet you. Looks like we're roommates." She accepted my handshake.
"Looks like it. Is it ok if I have the left side of the room?"
"Absolutely."
***
I sulked to the showers with Annette. After a long first day, I needed a shower. I've basically determined that Annette and I will become best friends, seeing as we've only known each other a few hours and know everything about each other.
She came from Germany three years ago to finish high school. She's nineteen, just like me. She apparently took a year off from school when her sister became ill last year-she's better now.
I also learned that she's a big fan of Ben's work. She knew who I was the minute she met me. As she puts it, she's a major fan, but not too stalkerish-like some fans. It was more like, she appreciated him, but didn't make or her life goal to meet him.
We got to the showers. I got into the closest, empty one and hung my towel on a hook where it will be dry. There were two parts to the shower, one was the actual shower, the other was a dry area with hooks and a bench. I undressed, putting my clothes on the bench. I got into the shower.
***
I flopped onto my bed. I grabbed the bear Ben won for me on our first date and grabbed my phone. I called Ben.
"Hello?" His voice filled my ears. I already missed him.
"Hi, Ben!"
"How was your first day?"
"Long and stressful. My roommate is pretty cool. How was your day?"
"The same. Not having you here is really lonely. I miss you, Emi." His words touched me, because I felt the same.
"I miss you too, Ben."
We talked for about an hour. I told him about Annette, New York, and Juilliard. He told me about his work; I mainly talked.
I glanced at Annette, snoring. I glanced at the clock. I realized I was exhausted now.
"I got to go, Ben, I'm tired. I love you, I'll talk to you tomorrow."
"I love you too, sweet dreams."
I smiled as I hung up. I plugged in my phone to charge. I got under the covers, I cuddled my bear. I fell asleep.
