The Italian language derived from the Latin language spoken in Rome. Currently the language is spoken by 66,000,000 people around the world. of course, it is spoken in Italy. Italian is also spoken in Switzerland, San Marino and that Vatican city. As a second language it is spoken in Albania, Malta, Slovenia and Croatia. It is also spoken by expatriates (people who have moved from their home country) in Australia, America and many European countries. There are said to be 6500 different languages around the world. Italian is the 23rd most spoken language. 1st is Mandarin, 2nd is Spanish, 3rd is English. English derived many of its words from Latin also, so we share some common words with the Italian language. Also, because we enjoy many aspects of the Italian culture we are familiar with a long list of Italian words.
