The word 'a' or 'an' is called the indefinite article. In Italian, the general rule for the indefinite article is:
un with a masculine noun,
una with a feminine noun.
but . . .
if the feminine noun starts with a vowel, the indefinite article is un'
if the masculine noun starts with 'st' 's plus a consonant' or 'z', the indefinite article is uno
Examples:
Masculine:
un libro
un quaderno
un astuccio
uno zaino
Feminine:
una riga
una gomma
un' agenda
