Chapter One|Leo Lightwood:Nick groaned as his alarm went off. It wasn't that he didn't like school—quite the opposite actually, Nick loved school. But it was a Monday and no matter who you were, where you were or how old you were, Mondays were the worst.
It wouldn't of been that bad for Nick, but his first three lessons were P.E.
In fact, he had come to the conclusion that it stood for Public Embarrassment.
Nick jumped out of bed after turning off his alarm, not bothering with the snooze button—Veronica (his mum) would come in soon any way if she thought he wasn't up.
His school uniform was neatly hanging up on his wardrobe's door, and most teenagers would of glared at the pieces of clothing, wanting to wear anything but them. But Nick wasn't like most teenagers.
He was far from it.

"I heard he ripped a guys eye out once."
"Someone told me that he does street fighting... with lions!"
The rumours got worst and more ridiculous by the second.
"What is everyone talking about?" Everyone seemed to be enthralled by some big gossip, but Nick had no clue what it was.
Josh looked at him as if he'd grew two heads, then sighed, shaking his head in disappointment dramatically. "Why am I surprised? They're talking about Leo Lightwood."
Nick looked up at the sky almost expecting lightning to burst from the gates of heaven and thunder grumble because of the way Josh said–
"Leo Lightwood? Who's he?"
Josh slapped Nick around his head.
"Ow! What was that for?!"
"Seriously, Nick, that's all anyone's been going on about for a week!"
Nick didn't really bother listening into gossip and he didn't have many friends. Actually, he only had one friend—which was Josh. Nick didn't even know how he knew—Josh had been off for a week with a virus.
Josh decided to answer Nick's question. "He's the new kid."
Usually, Nick would of pointed out that he doubted Leo would be a young goat, but his best fiends seemed rather annoyed at the moment so he decided to leave his mouth tightly shut.

Nick licked his top lip, turning the next page so quickly he swore it blur. But who could blame him? He was on such a good bit, and when Nick was reading a book, he couldn't put it down.
Oh gosh, the main character was about to fight a dragon and—
"What genre are you reading?"
Her voice was soft and caring—everything about her was like that. Nick turned around and saw Ella. Her strawberry blonde locks cascaded down her shoulders in waves and her brown eyes showed curiosity and interest.
"Erm, I—well, uh—" Oh no, he was getting all tongue tied. It was definitely not something Nick wanted to do—especially in front of his crush. Nick coughed and tried again. "F-fantasy."
"Oh cool," she smiled, "Do you mind if I sit here?"
Ella wasn't in Nick's form, but he usually sat alone anyway. Besides, Nick had come to form ten minuets early for some private reading time.
