Chapter Eleven: I'm Not Gay:

Nick opened his front door and quickly slipped in, closing it softly behind him. He had no doubt that the school had alerted his parents of his absence since he had about a dozen miss calls from both his parents.

He knew he would have to face them eventually but Nick couldn't stand the thought of sees the disappointment and anger in his parents eyes just yet.

"Nick is that you?" Called Veronica—his mother—from the kitchen.

Nick inwardly cringed knowing what was to come. Ted—Nick's father—came into Nick's view, Veronica following just behind him.

"Nicklaus Greyson Babbage, where have you been?!" His father roared. Ted Babbage may have seemed like the ordinary catholic man but he had a huge and short temper and he was not a force to be reckoned with when mad. "Answer me now!"

"I-I'm sorry I d-didn't feel well so—"

"DON'T YOU DARE LIE TO ME, BOY." His father spat.

Nick gulped, "Okay, okay, I'm sorry I was out with a friend—"

"Which friend?" Veronica piped in and then gasped, "It wasn't Josh was it?" Nick nearly rolled his eyes and felt a bitter emotion— of course the first thing his mother wanted to know if it was the angel Josh he skipped school with.

"No, it was another friend—" "Was it that new boy? I told u, Veronica that we shouldn't have let him go to that carnival thing, now look at him— he's probably high!" This time Nick really did roll his eyes.

Not once in his life had Nick done something truly bad, he was always trying to impress his parents and being the perfect golden boy was the way to do it. But it was hard just standing their having no reaction when his parents—especially his father—was being completely out of order.

"DON'T YOU DARE ROLL YOUR EYES AT ME, NICKLAUS GREYSON BABBAGE." His fathers voice was loud and commanding and it made Nick quiver in fear but Nick wasn't going to just sit back and let his father yell at him anymore. "So what if I missed a day at school? This has been the only day I've missed in the whole year so does it really matter?" Nick rushed out, determined to make a point to his parents, "And yes I did skip school with Leo and I'm sorry but—"

Nick heard the hard slap before he felt it. His father had slapped him. He heads his mother gasp and Nick's eyes filled up with tears. Never in his life had Ted ever hit his son.

Before a word could be uttered Ted pushed past Nick and headed out the door. Veronica smiled gently at her soon who was shaking slightly—almost as if the last five minuets had not happened. "Come on Nicklaus, I'll put the kettle on while you choose a film to watch in the living room, okay?"

Nick nodded and slowly walked into the living room and sat on the couch. He was still in shock, as tears fell from his eyes and his body shook. Shortly after his mother came into the living room– two mugs of tea in her hand and a blanket draped over her shoulder. She placed the cups on the coffee table and went behind Nick to drape the blanket over his shoulder. Nick and his mother fell asleep cuddling each other as The Lorax played on TV, not a single word spoken between the two.

The morning after Nike woke up with the feeling of a gentle hand stroking his hair. He smiled softly; Veronica would often do this ever since Nick was a small child to get him to sleep or to keep him calm when their was a storm. Nick loved it. "Good morning."

"Morning." Nick replied. No one uttered a word but it was clear what the unspoken question was between them. "Your father came back late last night. He's not here now though—he left for work early." His mother explained, all while keeping a smile on her face as if nothing was wrong. As if Ted hadn't hit his own son. As if nothing had happened. But something had happened. "Anyway, I called the school and told them you was sick—I thought we could have a day together, like we used to when you was little."

"Mum, you don't have to—" Nick began. He knew his mum felt guilt for what happened. Knowing her she probably felt like she was at fault and that she could have done something to stop last nights occurrence. But she couldn't have. If it wasn't last night then Nick's father would have snapped some other night. It's my own fault really, Nick thought, I knew skipping was a bad idea.

"Nonsense. It'll be fun."

At exactly 3:40 p.m. Nick's phone rang singling a text message had been sent.

From: The Best Kisser Ever To Exist
Hey, why weren't you in school today? Everything okay? Xx

Nick smiled; Leo must have added his number to his phone when he wasn't looking. Nick didn't have a password as he had nothing to hide.

He thought about telling Leo about what had happened with his dad—he needed someone to talk to about it and he didn't want to lie to Leo but at the same time he didn't want the pity he knew Leo would give Nick right after.

To: The Best Kisser Ever To Exist
Hi, everything's okay, just some family troubles so me and my mum decided to spend some extra time together

Now was the ultimate decision. To send or to not send kisses? He didn't want to give Leo the wrong idea—Nick was not gay—and he also didn't want to seem desperate. At the end Nick put just one kiss at the end and pressed send.

From: The Best Kisser Ever To Exist
Oh well that's good I guess. U coming in tomoz? Xx

To: The Best Kisser Ever To Exist
Well that's the plan x

He could see Leo typing, then it suddenly stopped and Nick frowned, only for his smile to reappear when it showed Leo calling him. Nick answered straight away and Leo and Nick talked and talked for what seemed only minutes but in actual fact been an hour. "So I know your parents are strict and all but I was wondering if y-you wanted to go to the cinemas with me?" Was Leo... nervous? He sure sounded it, and the Nick realised his words and became rather nervous too.

"Wait... you mean like a-a d-date? W-with me?" Nick couldn't help the feeling he got when he thought of the idea of going on a date with Leo, then holding his hand, then kissi— nope stop it, I'm not gay, I'm not gay. I'm not ga—

"Well, yeah. But only if you want it to be! I mean I was hoping but—"

"Okay."

"Okay? As in it's a date?"

"Erm well, s-sure." I'm definitely not gay, Nick thought as he gulped.

What did he just agree to?

Nick didn't know.
