Jane the Virgin is an American satirical romantic comedy-drama telenovela developed by Jennie Snyder Urman, that debuted on The CW on October 13, 2014. It is a loose adaptation of the Venezuelan telenovela Juana la Virgen created by Perla Farías. The series stars Gina Rodriguez as Jane Villanueva, a working, religious young Latina virgin, who becomes pregnant after being accidentally artificially inseminated. The program parodies commonly used tropes and devices in Latin telenovelas.

Jane the Virgin has received critical acclaim since its premiere. At the 72nd Golden Globe Awards, Gina Rodriguez won the award for Best Actress – Television Series, Musical or Comedy, while the show was nominated for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy. The series also received the Peabody Award and was named a TV Program of the Year by the American Film Institute.

Beginning with the fourth episode of season three, the series' title was modified, with "The Virgin" crossed out in favor of substitutes due to Jane now no longer a virgin.

On January 8, 2017, The CW renewed the show for a fourth season.

Jane Villanueva, the daughter of a teen mother, grew up determined not to repeat her mom's mistakes. Jane is studying to be a teacher, and she is engaged to a handsome detective who supports her decision to remain a virgin until marriage, but a routine visit to the clinic turns her life upside down. Inseminated by a specimen meant for a patient in the next room, Jane is in a situation made only more insane when she learns that the sperm donor is her boss, Rafael. As her meticulously planned life gets more like the telenovelas she loves, she faces a lot of complicated decisions about the future.
