I can't lie and say I wasn't enjoying myself because I was. Time had slowed down, the lights outlined every blurry body around me, and smoke filled the air.I was a little high and a little drunk but the balance between the two really evened out as I spun around in the crowd, dancing with Ethan while being surrounded by his friends, who were honestly the best hype men.
I was laughing, dancing, and talking; soaking in the attention and all the eyes on me. It was intoxicating, addicting even.
For one singular day, I get to reexperience the euphoria that these kids eat for breakfast every morning. A dish I hadn't indulged in a long time.
It had been a few months since the last time I really partied and I hated to admit it but I missed the feeling of all my inhibitions leaving my body.
I was distracted in my thoughts until a familiar tune rang through my ears.
"No fucking way, I love this song! I haven't heard it in so long!" I yelled at Ethan.
He laughed and nodded his head, grabbing my hands as we sang along, "She said, Cause I really need somebody, So tell me you're the somebody"
The whole house chanted in unison.
"Girl I fuck who I want and fuck who I don't, Got that A1 credit and that fillet mignon!"
Ethan and I were in each other's face, singing along, pointing our hands to the ceiling, shaking our heads, and screaming in unison.
"I'm on that good Kush and alcohol!"
"I got some down bitches I can call"
"I don't know what I would do without y'all."
"Imma ball till the day I fall."
It wasn't until the song ended that I realized I had a lot to drink.
Guess I have to even it out with another one.
I tapped Ethan on the shoulder to let him know I was traveling, and waded through the crowd, finding my friends at the pong table.
Rowan and Elizabeth were beating Lene and Daniel's ass.
"Typical." I laughed to myself.
On my way over, I noticed Carter walking up a staircase alone, looking dejected.
Against my better judgement, I followed after him.
"Hey, Carter."
Carter turned around. "Hey, Athena. Need something?"
I walked up the steps between us to come face to face with him.
Fuck I hope this doesn't create a mess.
"You okay?" I asked gingerly.
Carter sighed and sat down on the steps, overlooking the hoards of hot bodies. It was a good thing it was dark inside minus all the colored lights.
I sat down next to Carter and played with my fingers.
"I'm going to guess that's a no."
Carter looked me in the eyes and let some of his sandy brown hair fall onto his face.
"Michelle... I don't know how to keep up with her."
Really? Miss down in the dms is his problem?
"What happened...?"
Carter ran his hand through his hair, his muscles flexing as he did.
A small blush crept onto my face.
