When was the last I saw her? Her beautiful green eyes and pale skin. Her blonde hair, her scent... to me, it seemed like Peridot Diamond had just gone missing.
I recall the last time I heard her speak. It was during class one day. "...Ms. Lazuli, would you like to tell me what war burnt down the White House?"
"The Revolutionary War?" I was stupid enough to answer that, but I wasn't even paying attention.
"Wrong! The War of 1812!" Peridot said happily. The teacher smiled, "Good to know someone is paying attention."
"Don't worry, Lazuli, you'll get another chance." And that's the last I ever heard from her.
I sighed and leaned back more into my chair. "Lapis, school is today... do you still want to go?" My mother asked in a hesitant tone. I growled a bit, "No. Not unless Peridot is back. Did you call the school?"
She hesitated and then said, "...Yes, but there's no new information... I guess I'll allow you to stay until you're over... this." And with that, she was gone.
I grabbed my phone and looked at my messages.
Ninety-two (92) outbox.
Three (3) inbox.
Ninety-one of those messages were to Peridot. Only one was to my friend nicknamed "Blue". She had texted back three times, but each time, I refused to respond.
1. Lapis, what's up?
2. Lapis, you missed school today. Are you alright?
3. Yellow left the house today... I could use your support. Where have you gone? You've disappeared just like Peridot...
I couldn't bring myself to type, "Oh, yes, I'm fine. Sorry about Yellow, I'll be in school tomorrow. Wanna hang out by the beach?" or something like that. I couldn't do it.
"Lapis, you are seventeen now. You have a job, school to go to, and a college to register for. Don't let a stupid girl hold you back." My dad rambled.
I gripped the arms of the chair. "She is not stupid." I growled quietly. "What was that?" I got up, my face red, "She is not stupid! In no way is she! I don't know where she is, I don't even know if she's alive anymore! Her mom won't say anything and her dad ran off!
"Go ahead, say she's stupid one more time and I'm leaving! I'm getting a house of my own so I can say, 'Screw you, Lapis Lazuli has her own life,' so just do it! Tell me how much of a disappointment I am!"
My mom ran to my room and massaged my shoulders, trying to calm me down. "Hun, just go back to the living room, have another beer and-"
"Then get out of my house you ungrateful garbage."
That was all I needed to push Mom away and back hand my dad. "Get out of my room you screwup. I'll be gone by morning. Mom, I love you and goodnight. Dad, fuck you."
My dad left and my mom sighed. "I love you too, Lapis... just... call me if you need anything, alright? I'll still pay your phone bill unless you want to yourself after you get your job steady..." And she left as well.
I threw myself on the bed and wept. That's all I wanted to do. I ran my hands through my blue hair and ran my hands down my slightly tanned body. What was I going to do?
I grabbed my phone and texted Blue.
Hey, Blue. I'm coming to your place tomorrow morning. Dad just kicked me out. We'll talk once I'm there.
I started to pack up my stuff. Clothing, bedding, everything I owned. Blue texted back.
Okay, that's cool... I might still be asleep, but there's a key under the mat... goodnight, Lazuli.
It was nice to know that she'd always be there to support me even though I ditched her at the best of times.
This was going to be one hell of a ride.

That morning, I grabbed a cereal bar and ate it. My backpack dug into my shoulders and the suitcase I was carrying wasn't that light either. I walked outside and chucked my things in the back of my navy blue Chevy Malibu.
I got in the front seat and inserted my keys. The engine roared to life. Just to piss off my dad, I put my foot on the break and pressed the gas. The car roared. I repeated this several times before backing out of the driveway and driving to Blue's place.
I turned up my radio pretty loud to drown myself out.
I'm looking at you through the glass
Dunno how much time has passed
Oh God, it feels like forever...
     I sang along.
"But no one ever tells you that forever feels like home
Sitting all alone inside your head..."
The song came to an end soon and I was in Blue's driveway. I turned my car off and gathered my belongings. I threw her mat to the side and unlocked the door slowly and quietly before letting myself in and locking the door again.
"So, Lapis, what's been going on in Lazuli World?" Blue was standing against a doorframe, waiting for me.
