Everything was black. My chest hurt and I was so cold, it felt like my skin was burning. I didn't know if I was holding my breath anymore, but I sure hope I was. I started to see light then, and maybe I was imagining this, but an angel came along with it. I had never really believed in God, but I would thank Him for eternity for taking me to live with him. After being pulled up though, I knew I wasn't dead.
I was in a dream state for a long time, not understanding what was happening when I did wake up. I had seen Harry and faintly heard him call my name. I heard people laughing and crying. And lastly, I had heard someone singing, very beautifully but couldn't put my finger on who it was. I dreamt it was someone famous like Michael Jackson or Elvis, but it stopped before my dreams ended.
I woke up in a dark room that smelt like lavender and bacon. The bacon made my stomach growl, but I didn't want to get up. Whatever I was laying on was soft and warm, and playing with my hair. I tried moving but my whole body was stiff, like something was holding me down.
I wonder where Harry is. I hope that nothing bad happened to him when I fell in. I wonder who moved me, or who the hell pulled me out.
And that's when it hit me. I had been wearing a white shirt, which means when I was wet you could see... everything. That's when I really tried to get up, just so I could see if I was still wet. Maybe I could change before anyone could see me.
I slowly opened my eyes, sitting up steadily because it was the only speed my body would allow at this point. Someone helps me up gently, telling me to take it slow. Which I was already doing, if they hadn't noticed.
"Why does it smell like bacon?" I slur, looking around and surveying the room I was in.
The walls were blue and family photos hung on the walls. I was sitting on a large bed that was unmade. I turned to see that what I had been lying on was Harry. He was laughing, probably at my question, and pushing my wet hair out of my face.
"My mom made you food, but she didn't know what to make, so she made a little of everything." I look up to find his night stand full of every breakfast food you could think of. I reach for the glass of water, my hand visibly shaking.
"Maybe I should grab that for you." Harry says, lifting the glass to my lips slowly. I take small sips and tap Harry's hand when I'm done.
My throat, I had just realized, was burning. I tried to swallow but it was hard. I watch as Harry places the plates of food in front of me, telling me to eat something and that I'll feel better if I do. I pick up a piece of bacon and put it into my mouth, chewing long and slow so that I wouldn't have to swallow any big pieces.
I move so that my head was resting against Harry's chest, moving one of the plates closer so I could eat as well. "Tell me a story." I ask, my voice raspy. He looks down at me.
"Do you want me to tell you why I moved?" He asks, and I nod.
"I have an older sister named Emma. She finished high school this year and was looking around for colleges. And she ended up finding one a few minutes from this town. She applied to Mistmille college and was accepted. My parents were really worried about her traveling here alone, and when they weighed their options they realized she just couldn't go. One day my dad came home and complained about how our lives were always the same and how him and my mom had always lived in the same place. So my mom decided that we should be more adventurous and come with my sister, so everyone wins. I didn't really enjoy the idea so I skipped a lot of classes, and had to go to summer school." He finishes off, playing with my hair and watching as I continue to eat.
"Do you still miss England?" I ask, looking away. If he misses home then he might leave. And I definitely don't want him to leave me. Ever.
"Of course I do, it's where I was raised. But I'm not finding this place so bad. It's different, you know? Almost like a fresh start. I could be anything here. Plus, I met this great girl and she's making this move seem bearable." I look up and smile, grabbing his hand and kissing each of his fingers.
I suddenly remember why I had woken up and look down at my body. I was wearing a T-shirt that was three times my size and sweat pants that were so long, my feet didn't even come out of the holes at the bottom.
"Where are my clothes?" I ask, looking around his room.
"I put them to dry." Harry says, staring at me. Then a thought pops into my head that makes me blush.
"What?" he asks, putting his hands on either side of my face and turning my head so that I was looking at him.
"Who, um, changed my clothes?" I ask still blushing.
He chuckles and hold me close before answering. "How about I just tell you the whole story." He continues before I could reply. "After you fell in I jumped in after you. When I pulled you out those girls were already gone, so no one was around to call an ambulance while I checked if you were still breathing. I was having a hard time finding a pulse and you weren't responding. I tried everything. I was so scared that you weren't going to wake up, Autumn, I really was." He stops there, pulling me onto his lap. I place my head in the crook of his neck and nod for him to keep going.
"Your skin was really cold and you wouldn't answer me or wake up. Once I was sure that you were breathing and your heart was beating, I brought you to my car and drove you to the hospital. I had a blanket in my car so I wrapped it around you so you wouldn't get hypothermia. When I got to the hospital I yelled for a nurse to help me. I must have sounded like a mad man. Anyway, they put you into a room and you started to cough and vomit, and I was so worried. They told me that it was a symptom of what you went through. They checked you a few times, and I told them that maybe you should be admitted, but they told me there was no need, that you were perfectly fine. I asked when you would wake up and they said that you eventually would." He sighed and pulled me closer so there was no space in between us.
"I was going to drive you home, but I didn't want your parents to think I tried to drown you or anything. So I came back here and my mom helped wash your hair, which had gross plant things and vomit in it," I laugh at his statement, "and then she changed your clothes. I sat with you and talked to you so maybe you would wake up, but you didn't."
"You sang to me, didn't you?" I asked moving away so that I could see his face. He looked away, embarrassed that I had heard him. "You're really good Harry." I tell him kissing his cheek.
"I didn't think you would hear that." I laugh and start to cough, shaking the
whole bed when I did. Harry hands me the water, and I take a huge gulp.
"Thanks." I tell him, smiling weakly.
We sat in silence for a while, and with my head to his chest all I could hear was the sound of his heartbeat. It was steady and strong, and I started to fall asleep. And I guess Harry noticed this because he started to hum, and soon I fell into a deep sleep.
