8- The day we didn't do anything

Saber stood behind the door. She do not bother to change to her combat clothes since I am not really a threat. Her eyes drifts as I sat on the floor, cross legged.

"What is happening there?" I asked. "If your master-"

"No, nothing out of ordinary" Saber hastily replied. "If you are to meddle the process, master will start again from beginning"

Her hands clutching her blouse's ribbon clearly tells a different story. What REALLY happening there is unspeakable. I want to open it and peek. I left the Holy Grail 101 book for dummies in my room so I don't know how this process initiated. Archer is acting weird when we talked about it. If is it about his inexhaustible pride...

"So, about this gas leak..." I changed the subject.

"Like master said, Lancer needed sufficient mana to use his noble phantasm. We used the term gas leak because the outsiders must not know the existence of the ritual" Saber plainly explained. "Of course, non-magic users like outsiders has only mana reserves called Od, once it is depletes, their soul are slowly consumed  by the Servant"

"So you mean that Servants draw mana from human soul?!" My voice came out like a shrieking girl. The dark figures inside the room moved slowly as they heard me cry.

"The church now forbids it" Saber gravely replied. "But we cannot avoid masters with unorthodox methods"

I balled my fist. This is the reason why I decided to join this stupid ritual for a cup. To stop the other six pairs of contestants from harming outsiders. Saber read through my thoughts and decided to stand guard.

"If you have any questions, ask"

I look at her and frown. I have many questions about the war but still I jumped into the mess together with Archer. Now I am risking Saber and Tohsaka and wasting their precious time to a rank E- master like me. I decided to ask her the question that is bothering me ever since we made an alliance pact.

"Why does Tohsaka decided to join forces with me?" I mumbled. Sadly, Saber heard it.

She delayed for a minute and choose her words carefully in fear of hearing it from her master. "Miss ____, you haven't heard of my master's aunt, Rin Tohsaka?"

The name lingered for a moment and the first image that came to my mind is the girl with ponytails from the painting. "Haven't heard of her but I think she is from the painting in the dinning room"

"She is a magus that master look up, she is a participant in the 5th holy grail war. Even if she did not win, my master mimic every decision she made" Saber said. "She joined forces also with a master like you" She carefully finished, in fear of disrespecting me but I already accepted it.

"Also, you have her father's Servant. Master thinks that Miss Rin's decision will not fail this time, you are, yes a low ranked master, but you have possibly the strongest heroic spirit. The possibilities are endless"

"Yeah, I know" I frown. "Yet he is the complete opposite of me! I am not supposed to summon him, I am not supposed to be a master after all!" My voice must've heard through the clinic as I heard rustle of bed sheets.

Saber winched as she look away. Her ruby eyes has those perpetual sad look. "Be very careful of your words, young master. I was not supposed to be here if not for you" 

I tried to think of a reason why she said it but then it hit me. If me and Maya don't go to the abandon house and I do not opened the window in the first place, I would not be a master and forge a contact with Archer. Saber is only a replacement for Archer, since Tohsaka is the one who should be the master of my servant. The way Saber said it, she is thanking me for making this mistake and I gave her a chance to take part in the Holy Grail War ritual. Every Servant summoned in this island have their own reasons why they are called in the first place.
