Lottie looked hard at Kai. He was staring back at her, fear a clear sign in his green eyes.
"What's wrong?" she asked, as they turned to walk out of the library. He just shrugged, not letting his eyes meet hers. Lottie stopped in her tracks. She put her hands on her hips.
"I know that's a lie Kai!" she said, her eyes widened, "Just tell me!" Kai sighed, his eyes begging the floor to open up and swallow him whole. He glanced, nervously, up at Lottie and shook his head.
"You scare me sometimes," he said. Lottie made a face and looked at him curiously. What was he on about? Her? Scary? In what way, exactly?
"What an Earth are you talking about?" she questioned, "How am I scary?"
Kai sighed again and scratched his head. "I knew you wouldn't understand," he muttered glancing at the door and taking a few paces towards it.
"Kai come back!" cried Lottie, "How am I scary!?" Kai ignored her.
"KAI!" she yelled. She had to know what he was talking about. How was she scary? This guy WOULD give her the answers. NOW.She stormed over to Kai, blocking his exit. He made a face.
"Let me go ,Lot," Kai protested. Lottie shook her head furiously.
"NO," she snapped, "Not until you answer my question!"
Kai glared at her. Anger rousing in his eyes. Lottie glared just as furiously back. They were like to two cats, one of them had just walked into the others home and a nasty fight had just begun.
"Lot, shut up and lets go," said Kai, hiding his clenched fists behind his back. He walked up to the door, but Lottie moved fast and blocked his way.
"NO," she snapped angrily, "NOT until you EXPLAIN yourself!" There was a hint of fear in Kai's eyes but it flashed away in seconds.
"Lot, you'll get the police on us if you don't shut up," he said quietly. Lottie raised an eyebrow.
"I thought you weren't scared, Mr Kai," she cooed, mimicking BP-Justine. Kai flashed a dagger-like glare. But in seconds it was replaced with fear. His eyes widened with fright and he lifted a shaking hand and pointed directly over Lottie's head. Lottie responded with a nasty smile.
"You ain't tricking me Kai," she said with pride. If Kai was trying to trick her, it wasn't going to work. No matter how hard Madison had tried over the years, she hadn't manage to trick her. Lottie knew all the tricks. For her they were to obvious to spot.
"NO Lot, it isn't a trick! Honestly!" replied Kai, his voice was shaking as he gestured again to behind Lottie.
"Excuse me," said a voice. Lottie froze. "But what in the world are you two doing here!?"
Nervously, Lottie turned and came face to face with a very angry policeman.
"ANSWER!" he boomed, pulling his hat further onto his head. He looked, furiously, at each one of them as if he were sizing them both up. Then he squinted at their badges.
"Well, well, well, having a go at playing police are we now?" he said chuckling. "This is a restricted area, no public access!" His face went from sweet and child-like to almost terrifyingly angry.
Lottie shuddered and watched Kai bravely approach the angry police man. He wore a calming smile and tucked his hands into his large pockets. He pointed to his badge.
"Agent Cumming's at your service sir. Number 56. No, we are not 'playing police' as you worded it , sir. I am 16, I look young but my family has for generations. We were just finishing our investigation, sir. Interesting stuff here. Looks like a real nasty murderer."
