That next morning the sun rose with Gordie on guard. It was gorgeous.
The train went by and woke up the others, minus Gordie, and they all packed their things and they went back on their journey.
All the kids were hungry and luckily they found a berry bush that they were able to pick fresh berries off of.
As they followed the tracks eating their berries Vern said, "Jeez, Gordie. Why couldn't you have got some breakfast stuff, like Twinkies and Pez and Root Beer?"
"Sorry, Vern," Gordie said. "I guess a more experienced shopper could have gotten more for your seven cents."
Kaitlyn and Ella both couldn't fight back a chuckle.
Walking down the tracks Gordie and Chris lead, then Ella and Kaitlyn in the middle, and then finally Vern and Teddy in the back.
"I have something to tell you," Kaitlyn said to Ella.
"Yeah?" Ella asked. "What's up?"
"Well," Kaitlyn said, a blush coming on, "I might've had a kiss with a certain blonde boy last night."
Ella gasped, not too loud so the others could hear thankfully, "I called it! I totally put it in your head. How was it?"
Kaitlyn's blush grew, "It was absolutely amazing. It felt like the earth aligned. I can't explain it."
Ella gushed, "I'm so happy for you."
Kaitlyn smiled and walked a little more lightly, "thank you."
Ella was smiling but it started to fade, "we're about to see a dead body soon."
Kaitlyn frowned, "I don't want to."
"Me neither," Ella agreed.
The two girls walked in silence thinking about the depressing events to come.
A few miles later, Chris started to look down a hill.
"What is it?" Kaitlyn asked the boy.
He looked at her and smiled, "The Royal."
"God," Teddy started, "Tracks go way out of the way."
Chris was quick to talk, "If we cut across this field right here we'll be there in an hour."
