howling at the moon (a Shadouge story)

Chapter 2

You must think I'm bored. Anyway I don't own the pic and enjoy reading. 

Rico's pack already picked up a new scent and Rico sniffed the ground. Rouge couldn't stop thinking about Shadow. "He's so attractive ..." Rouge thought but mentally slapped herself for thinking that. "Rouge stop it. You're Rico's mate ... but Shadow's so different from Rico. Rouge stop it already." Rouge thought and shook the thought from her head and focused on the moose they were tracking. 

After eating the pack returned to the den and laid in front of the den and were talking or sleeping for the remainder of the day. Silver and Blaze were cuddling and soon fell asleep. Knuckles and Tails were chasing each other. Amy and Sonic were lying on a rock and watched the clouds above them. Rico went into the den and laid down for a nap. Rouge however couldn't get Shadow out of her mind and walked off without anyone noticing. She tried to get Shadow out of her head and without realizing it she wandered outside of her pack's territory.

Shadow, who took the leftovers of the deer back to his den, was lying on the rock and stared at nothing in particular. Sometimes he looked into the clouds and noticed that the clouds were getting darker. "It seems like winter is coming earlier this year." Shadow said and threw his head up as he sniffed the air and a familiar scent came into his nose. "Not good." Shadow said and climbed down the rock as he also smelled the scent of an other animal. As Shadow reached the ground he speed off into the forest. 

Rouge stared out at the now setting sun and noticed that it began to snow. "I better get back before Rico gets to worried." Rouge thought but her thoughts were interrupted by growling from behind her. Rouge turned around and found herself face to face with a large mountain lion. "Not good." Rouge thought and staggered backwards in fear. The lion came closer with every step and Rouge suddenly slid down a small hill she haven't noticed before. She was now lying on her side and the mountain lion was about to jump on her. 

Shadow saw Rouge sliding down the small hill and ran as fast as he could. The lion jumped at her but before he could bring his razor sharp claws and teeth into Rouge's flesh Shadow jumped over her and jumped at the mountain lion and attempted to gash his throat. 

Rouge closed her eyes and prepared herself for the pain she'll feel knowing that she wouldn't escape the lion's attack but this attack never came. Instead she heard the lion growl in agony and a familiar growl from a wolf.   

Shadow bit down in the lion's throat and the lion cried out in pain. He slashed at Shadow to get free but Shadow just growled and didn't let go of the mountain lion's throat. "Shadow?" Rouge said surprised and watched Shadow fighting the mountain lion. The lion now shook his head frantically to shook Shadow off. The mountain lion slammed Shadow against a tree causing him to yelp and let go of the lion's throat. Shadow quickly jumped to his feet and leapt back to avoid the lion's razor sharp claws. Shadow then attacked once more and tore at the mountain lion's throat. The lion bit down on Shadow's shoulder and Shadow howled in pain and letting go of the lion's throat once again. The lion lunged at Shadow, teeth bared and claws ready to kill his attacker. But the lion suddenly yelped as something attacked him in the air. The lion slid on the dirt a full yard. Shadow took this opportunity and pinned the lion down and bit down on the lion's throat. Shadow broke his neck and the lion now laid lifeless on the ground. Shadow stood over the dead lion and panted of exhaustion. He turned towards Rouge and smiled slightly before he collapsed on the ground. 

"Shadow?" Rouge said with worry as she trotted over to him and nudged him gently. "Shadow, come on, you have to get up. It's to dangerous to stay outside at night." Rouge said and Shadow opened his eyes. "Just give me a second." Shadow whispered and opened his eyes to look at her. "Are you alright." Shadow asked as Rouge laid down beside him and licked the blood off of his wound. "Yes, only because you were there to save me." Rouge said smiling and continued licking Shadow's wounds.Two minutes later he finally rose to his feet and Rouge put her head under his neck to help Shadow to his feet. Shadow started walking and Rouge noticed that Shadow limped slightly. She soon walked closer to Shadow, letting him lean some of his weight on her. 

"Why are you here and not in your territory?" Shadow asked and looked at her. "I was trying to get my mind clear and didn't pay attention where I was going. "The sun has already set." Shadow said and Rouge looked a bit worried. "You are welcome to stay at my den if you wish." Shadow said and Rouge looked at him surprised. "Really? Thank you." Rouge replied and she licked Shadow's cheek and Shadow smiled at her. The two continued their walk which was faintly lighted by the moon.

About fifteen minutes later they reached Shadow's den and Shadow pushed the brush aside with his paw to reveal the entrance to his den. "Ladies first." Shadow said and Rouge walked in with no problem. She laid down and Shadow soon joined her and laid down next to her. "Don't you have a pack?" Rouge asked as she noticed that except for the two of them no other wolfs were in the den. "No. Not anymore." Shadow answered. "What happened?" Rouge asked. "It was half a year ago. My dad was the alpha and we were hunting as a group of human hunters shoot my family and the rest of my pack." Shadow said, his eyes full of sorrow and anger. "I'm so sorry. I shouldn't have asked." Rouge said guilty. "It's okay. ... Good night Rouge." Shadow said and closed his eyes. "You too." Rouge said nuzzled her nose into Shadow's neck. Shadow smiled and laid his head in her neck and both fell into the world of sleep.
