howling at the moon (a Shadouge story)

Chapter 3

Hi, sorry for letting you wait for such a long time. I had a lot to do for school and also had to deal with a few personal problems. ... Anyway I finally had time to write this chapter. I hope you like it and I do NOT own this pic. 

Shadow awoke the next morning and saw him and Rouge still cuddling. He smiled at Rouge as she nuzzled into his chest for warmth. He slowly sat up, trying to not wake up Rouge. Rouge noticed the warmth disappear and slowly opened her eyes. "Huh?" Rouge said as she looked confused around her. "Good morning." Shadow said with a smile. Rouge turned to Shadow and the events from the last day ran through her head. "Morning." Rouge said and returned the smile. "Did you sleep well?" Shadow asked and Rouge nodded. "Yeah but without you I would be frozen because of the cold." Rouge said as she stretched. "Yeah it seems that the winter is a bit early this year." Shadow said and looked at the entrance of his den. "Are you hungry?" Shadow asked. "A bit." Rouge replied and followed Shadow as he made his way out of the den. 

The two wolves were walking out of the den and cold wind blow through their fur and both were standing in the snow. Shadow sniffed the air and the ground and soon caught the scent of rabbits. "Wanna go and hunt rabbits?" Shadow asked as he sniffed the air. "Sure, I love rabbit." Rouge said and followed Shadow into the bushes. 

In the meantime Rouge's pack awoke from their sleep. They went out of the den and Rico was looking at his pack. He still hadn't noticed that Rouge wasn't here. As every day he went out first and was followed by his pack but then Rico noticed that something was different. He looked around frantically as he couldn't find Rouge. "Where's Rouge?" Rico asked and the others were looking around for the alpha female. "Wasn't she in the den yesterday?" Sonic asked and Rico ran back into the den but couldn't find his mate. "She's not in the den. Where could she be?" Rico said as he came back out. "We have to find her!" Amy said and the others nodded. "Okay here's the plan." Rico said and his pack was listening carefully. "Knuckles you'll go and search for Rouge while we go for a hunt." Rico said and everyone nodded. "I'll try to find her." Knuckles said and started sniffing the ground, following her every move she made the day before. Rico also sniffed the ground and the rest of his pack was following him through the forest. 

Shadow stopped and looked in front of him. There sat a rabbit and was hopping through the snow, sniffling the ground every now and then. Rouge saw their prey and licked her lips. "I'm ready when you are." Shadow said as he saw Rouge. "Let's go." Rouge said and the two got into positions to ambush. They crept closer and closer without the rabbit noticing. Shadow was about to give the signal to attack but then Rouge accidentally stepped on a stick causing it to snap. The rabbit's ears twitched and it started running. "Quick." Shadow ordered before he was running into the bushes. Rouge didn't expect him dashing off this fast and followed him. Rouge at first had problems keeping up with Shadow but was still able to see him running in front of her. "Wow he's really fast." Rouge thought and speed up. Shadow made a sharp turn and then Rouge heard a yelp from the rabbit. As Rouge finally caught up she saw Shadow sitting in the clearing with the dead rabbit lying on the ground in front of him. "You're fast!" Rouge said as she sat down beside Shadow, catching her breath. "If you have to hunt all by your self you'll get quicker." Shadow said and shoved the dead rabbit over to Rouge. "Go ahead eat." Shadow said and Rouge looked a bit confused at Shadow. "Aren't you hungry?" Rouge asked. "A bit but I want you eating first." Shadow replied and Rouge smiled at him. "Rico would never do this." Rouge thought and quietly started eating her breakfast. 

Lilac eyes were watching the two wolves without Rouge and Shadow noticing. Knuckles heard voices as he was following Rouge's scent and hide in the shadow's of the trees to spy on the two wolves. As Rouge started eating Knuckles turned around and made his way back to his den to tell his alpha. Ten minutes of running later he reached his pack and Rico looked at him with interest. "Did you find her?" Rico asked. "Yes and she's with that black wolf who was hunting in our territory yesterday." Knuckles explained but stopped as Tails brought him a peace of meat from their hunt. Rico waited for Knuckles to finish his meal. "Where are they?" Rico asked angrily. "They were hunting together but I don't know why Rouge is following him." Knuckles replied. "I don't care about that. I want my mate back. Show me the way Knuckles." Rico commanded and Knuckles nodded. "But Rico don't you want to talk to them before you start a fight?" Sonic asked. "Shut up Sonic I'm the alpha so I'm saying what we're doing. Now shut up." Rico said and Sonic did what he was told before Rico dashed off into the forest were Knuckles was coming from.

After Shadow finished eating he looked at Rouge and stood up. "You ready to go home?" Shadow asked and Rouge looked slightly confused. "Oh ... yeah." Rouge said with slight disappointment in her voice. She really enjoyed being around Shadow because he's so different from Rico. "We better get going before your alpha gets too worried." Shadow said and headed off, leading the way. He soon reached the border of Rico's territory and stopped. "I guess you can walk alone from here on." Shadow said as he recognized the scent of Rico's territory. "Do you really have to leave?" Rouge asked looking straight into Shadow's eyes. "Yes, I was told to stay out of your territory by your alpha." Shadow replied and Rouge's ears dropped in disappointment. Shadow licked Rouge's cheek and in the exact same moment Rico walked out of the bushes and saw them.
