CHAPTER 8: Aidan

We’re moving. Again. I was actually just getting settled here, why couldn’t we just stay somewhere for once. I also was wondering where Claire was, she had been here earlier, where did she go? Then my phone rang, the caller ID read Plain County Hospital and Morgue. What the hell were they calling me for?

“Hello?” I answered the phone, confused.

“Hello, is this Aidan Jacobs?” The voice asked.

“Um, yes. Why?” My voice quavered.

“We are sorry to inform you that your sister, Clairica Felicia Jacobs, has been in a car accident and is in critical condition.” The voice reported.

“I just have one suggestion, wait no, I have two. First, change your caller ID so it doesn’t include both Hospital and Morgue. Second, do not start with “we are sorry to inform you.” That just says that whatever you say is going to be awful no matter what it is.” I say, then hang up by pressing almost all the buttons on my phone.

Tears sprang to my eyes. I didn’t usually cry, but now called for it. I had to tell my parents now though, and that would take effort.

“Mom? Dad?” I shout down the long hallway.

“Is there something you need son?” My dad stepped out of his office.

“What is it dear?” My mom asked.

“Claire.” I was having trouble getting the words out. “She’s in the hospital.”

“But she was just here a moment ago. She can’t be in the hospital.” My mom smiled in disbelief. She thought I just wanted attention, she thought I was acting out.

“She was upset about moving,” my voice scarcely coming out. “She went to the park, but when she was leaving she got hit by a car.” Wait, how did I know this, no one ever told me this.
