CHAPTER 10: Jessica

I arrived home to a terrifying scene. Jacen was missing and Mandy and Madi were in the hospital. Also blood was all over the playground in the back yard. I took Adam and May, to the hospital so we could see how they were. When we got there, I slipped the change from the bus into my pocket and it made an annoyingly loud jangling sound. The pungent smell of cleaning supplies mingled with the musty aftertaste of death made me stumble as I pushed through the squeaking revolving door. I hated hospitals, especially ever since my mom got sick. I had hung out there almost everyday after school, both Adam and I. It hit me now, how much I really missed my mom, no matter what had really happened.

We walked up to the reception and got their room number. We had to take the elevator to their room. The elevator was cramped and warm. The walls were a disgusting greenish-yellow and it smelled of crayons. There was a lady with a cart full of putrid smelling meals, which made me hungry regardless of how repulsive they were. I hadn’t eaten in at least 3 days, which was a record for me, so I blocked out my hunger. I took a deep breath right before walking off the elevator, I mean smelling is just like tasting right?

When I first walked into their room, I saw a small figure in all black hunched over Madisyn’s bed. I looked away for a split second to look at Mandy and see how she was. When I looked back the figure was gone. I stumbled, gracefully across to room over to Madi. I wanted to make sure she was okay; I just wanted to know what was really going on. I wanted to know where Jacen was, I wanted to know what had happened, but the sad fact is that I probably never will. I wondered why everything bad had to do with hospital, how ironic is it that I feel a sharp pain in the back of my neck. My veins suddenly felt like ice was running through them. I whipped around just to see a boy with the most beautiful eyes I had ever seen turn and walk out. My eyes slammed close as I crumpled to the ground.

I woke up shackled to a chair, I looked around to see Adam and May in the same predicament as me. They look at me, so much fear in their eyes. I struggled, but it was hopeless, I was stuck. We were stuck. It looked like we were in a basement. It was cold, and the air was musty and damp. I heard footsteps coming closer, and I began to panic. I shook the whole chair, but nothing happened.

“Well, well, well. What do we have here?” A voice came from the shadows, a voice I knew. It was the voice of the boy from the park. “You can’t get out of those, no one can. Except me that is.” He said cruelly, and then he cackled. What villain actually cackled? Freak.

“What do you want from us?” I said trying to keep my voice as calm as possible. I didn’t want to sound afraid, for Adam and May, and maybe even me too. Maybe I could force myself to believe I wasn’t afraid. The boy walked into the dim light. He grinned at me wickedly, but his eyes were so deep you could lose yourself in them.

“Silly little Jessie Sue, I only want something from you.” How does he know my mom’s nickname for me? “You don’t remember me do you?” He laughed, a short pained sound. “Of course you don’t why wouldn’t you remember your best friend from middle school? Well I do go by Houdini now so maybe that’s what throws you off.”

“Hunter?” I gasp; he was my best friend in middle school. He was probably the scrawniest kid in the whole school, but he was really sweet, so I was friends with him, but then I became friends with Amanda. She told me to ditch him, and so I did. I had always felt bad, but apparently he holds quite a grudge.
