Coming Home

Y/n woke up to the glare of the afternoon sun. Wha- Where am I?

She gradually remembered the events of the night before as the haze of exhaustion cleared from her mind.

"How far did I go?"

She looked around for a moment, trying to spot some familiar landmark. She glanced around until a tall building in the distance caught her eye. There's the office building that's a few blocks from my house! I really went a long way...

The building was a full five miles away. So, Y/n started walking. The streets around her eventually grew more familiar. She stopped about a block from her home.

What if they're still there? Or, worse, I come back to find Minuet... She couldn't even bear to think the word. She ultimately decided to scope out the place before going inside.

She walked down the road, trying to appear casual to passerby. Her eyes flitted from face to face, looking for any sign of trouble. Her face paled as she saw the front door of her house.

It was busted off its hinges, scratches and holes in the side that was facing in. She approached, fear slowing her steps.

Is that... Blood? A small amount of the red substance was puddled on floor of the entry. She shivered, hoping that it wasn't Minuet's.

She shuddered at the claw marks on the furniture. The walls. The floors. Everywhere.

A trail of blood lead from the stairs to the puddle at the door. She felt sure that neither of them were here. She thought about calling Minuet. He should be back to normal by now. She briefly thought of the conversation they'd had the day after the Harvest Festival. He'd explained a few things about his Change.

"Y/n, I need to say some things. I am going to be here for your whole life, so you need to know more about my condition."

"Okay. Tell me what you want to."

"Okay. How do I begin... Well, I was born a half-cat, but the demon part came later. Scherzo is the demon that you saw that night. He is always trying to escape, but only when I panic or go into a rage does he come out."

"So you've got to focus on keeping him in, all day, every day?"

"Yeah. The process is called the Change, and I won't bore you with the biological details. Just know that I am not in control when it happens. I am trapped inside of him, and I can only influence his actions a little. So if you see him, you should run. I won't let him chase you. I'm not much help beyond that."

"So, he's an entirely different being?"

"He is. We share this body, however, and he makes the most of his time. Because he's so active, our energy drains in a few hours. We'll become me again, and all will be well."

"Okay. So, Scherzo has a time limit. I will remember that."

"Don't try to fight him if he does catch you. He's inhumanly strong, and usually isn't out for blood. I feel sorry for him. He's trapped in the blackest part of my mind, the part reserved for witch hunters and Hell."

She thought about the time limit. Did you run out of time, Minuet?

Y/n felt the inexplicable need to fix the door. Can't let the people see in.

Her phone jingled in he pocket, "Ne ne, Papa, Wine no chodai? Ne ne, Mama, NE NE MAMA!" (Hetalia fans out there anywhere?)

"Minuet?!" Surely enough, it was his melodic voice she heard on the line.

"Y/n?! You're okay, right? I didn't-"

"Of course nothing happened to me. I'm home now. Where are you?"

"I was... Taken, Y/n. That douche had me caged and leashed like a dog! I have escaped for now, and we need to leave."

"But where can we go?"

"I can't say. Pack your clothes. It's gonna be hot, just a warning. I'll be there in thirty minutes."

"Okay, bye, Minuet! See you!"

"Bye, Y/n."

Click.

The line cut off. She hurried, throwing her shorts and tees in a suitcase. Fifteen minutes later, she was waiting by the door.

"No matter what, my life will never be the same. I'll never get to be normal again..."
