Y/n

Minuet looked alert, for once. His fluorescent, lime green eyes were wide open, and his ears were pinned against his head. Y/n felt his steady hand on her arm, a little burst of light amid all this darkness and fear. She saw his fear in how he stalked down the shadowy hallway.

"Minuet, I-" She paused, hesitant. Afraid he didn't feel the same. Afraid it was breaking some unspoken rule of the universe to feel this way. Maybe it wasn't right to love someone... someone like him.

He looked away from the endless-seeming corridor, worried eyes alighting on her face. She realized they were the only source of light and courage she needed.

"Minuet, I lo-"

"Let's not." A commanding voice said from behind them. They both whipped around, facing the faint outline of a boy, backlit in the window at the end of the hall. His cerulean eyes glowed almost as brightly as Minuet's lime ones.

The moon bleached out all traces of any of the other daylight colors Y/n knew were present. His sun-colored hair, his bright clothes. The only color in the monochrome nightmare they were in was the two pairs of eyes, one set blue, the other green, both of them on her.

Paris watched cautiously, tilting his head. "So is this rejection, Y/n? Is this vague pain in my heart when I see you anywhere but with me love? Because, if so, love isn't worth the trouble."

Y/n opened her mouth to speak, but was interrupted by Minuet, who spoke brave and clear.

"You don't have a heart."

"You would know, huh? You would know! An animal! A pet! You would know what love is!"

The cat-boy looked stricken, as if he had been dealt a fatal blow he hadn't seen coming.

"He's not an animal! He is more human than you could ever be!" Y/n had to defend him. He was hurting again, and she refused to stand by and let this boy make him cry.

"Oh, and you. You snake, how cute. You're probably in love with the thing."

She couldn't accept or reject that. "He's not a thing, to be toyed with at your pleasure! He has thoughts and feelings! You're the creature, out of the two of you. Paris, consider this a formal rejection of your attention. Go to Hell!"

Minuet lifted his head, his delicate features morphed into something else. Her words gave him a terrible strength, and Paris gave him somewhere safe to direct it. She saw golden tattoos begin spiraling across his face and neck. She saw his eyes lose their lively green tint, becoming a flat, cold gold. She saw the black hair spring from every follicle on his body.

The Change was happening. She knew innately that this other thing, this being that he barely kept contained, had very little self-control. She could see it in the way he held himself, in how he looked like a lion readying to pounce. How his eyes moved, snapping to one side, then the other, constantly surveying his surroundings for danger.

He transformed in seconds. Minuet, her housecat, disappeared into Scherzo, the untamed panther.

He growled. "That's my specialty, tesoro." He smirked at her, the kindness in his eyes gone. Then he turned to face Paris, who was trying to back away. She remembered him telling her to run if she saw him again. She remembered the first time they'd met, the fear Minuet she'd seen in his eyes afterwards.

So she ran from both of them. She ran until she couldn't remember why she was running anymore.

A/n: Tesoro is Italian for sweetheart, by the way.

Here's a weird fact about Minuet and Scherzo's names that I learned earlier.

In music, a 'minuet' is a movement in a song, and a 'scherzo' is a movement that sometimes replaces a minuet.

I just thought I had to share that...

'Cause, you know, Scherzo is possessing Minuet.

Thank you to rhian-chan, yet again.
