Ship: Charles Lee x Reader

F/N: Father's name
L/N: Last name.
Y/N: Your name.

After the duel with John Laurens, Charles Lee found himself broke, injured, and in dire need of money. Once he found himself tired of doing odd jobs, Charles came across an opportunity he could only describe as a 'godsend'. He found a job as one of the guards for a wealthy family.

The family was rather rich and short on staff, but they still had high expectations. Charles made sure to look presentable and to keep his cool. Sooner than later, he got the job after being interviewed by the head of the household himself, F/N L/N.

"Well, Mr. Lee, you have the job. You start tomorrow night. My wife, daughter, and I will be attending a ball and we need you to keep an eye on our daughter. Is that clear?" F/N kept a stern eye on Charles. Charles nodded curtly. "Yes, sir."

Timeskip

Charles and the head of the staff, Sebastian, were following the L/N family carriage to the venue hosting the ball. While Sebastian busied himself fixing his overcoat, Charles looked out the window. "Hey, um...Sebastian, why do the L/Ns need guards? What's up with that?"

Sebastian stopped and focused on the young veteran. "Well, Miss Y/N had a suitor. A wealthy, quite handsome suitor that would marry her up in status. Of course, his exterior was of pure but his mind and heart were rotten. When the young mistress tried to call off the engagement, her suitor attacked her. The engagement has been called off but her parents fear that he might return."

Charles raised his brow. "What some men will do for money...or you know." He chuckled while Sebastian only smiled stiffly and nodded. Charles' chuckling died out as Sebastian stared at him. "So...what is the young mistress like? I was told I was to keep an eye on her."

Sebastian glanced out the window. "Well, she's rather talented with instruments. She's also quite bright. Her tutors are fond of her. However, she is a free spirit. At times, she is as prim and proper as a lady should. Other days, I've had to chase her down because she wanted a wild horseride. But, I assure you, she is a kind woman."

The tsundere veteran nodded and kept note of Sebastian's description. He hoped to be ready for whatever this girl tossed at him. He scoffed at himself. If he could manage fighting in the war, he could handle some girl.

Finally, the carriage came to an abrupt stop. Sebastian stepped out of the carriage and helped Mrs. L/N out of the family carriage. Her husband walked after her but he turned back and looked into the lavish carriage. "Y/N, come now. Your new guard is ready to meet you and the ball will not wait on you." Lee waited by the steps of the carriage for the maiden. Finally, the girl stepped out.

A young girl, as old as 19, stepped out. Lee instinctively held her hand as she made her way to the entrance of the venue. "It's nice to meet you, Ma'am. I am Charles Lee, your new guard." The pretty H/C haired girl smiled softly at the new guard. "Likewise, Mr. Lee. My name is Y/N L/N."

'So far, so good', Charles thought to himself. The girl was sweet and pretty, the pay was great, and he didn't have Washington or Hamilton on his ass. He smiled as he thanked his lucky stars. Suddenly, Y/N's voice brought him back to reality.

"Mr. Lee?" Y/N looked somewhat nervous but her voice didn't waver. "Yes, Miss? Is there a problem?" Y/N nodded discreetly. "My former suitor is here. He's coming this way." Charles glanced at the crowd quickly and saw a younger man walking towards them, an upset look on his face. Lee looked back at Y/N. "What do you suggest we do?"

Out of the blue, the orchestra started playing. Charles had an idea and wasted no time going about it. He swiftly, but gently, took Y/N to the dancefloor and began dancing. "He wouldn't dare approach you like this." Y/N nodded and went along with the plan. Lee kept an eye for Y/N's former suitor and made sure to lose him in the crowds of dancing partners.

"That man...he's relentless, isn't he?" Lee looked at the shorter woman. She nodded. "Prideful, too. No one says no to him. You can imagine how well he took it when I cancelled the engagement." Lee nodded. "I'm sorry that you have to spend the entire night dancing just to get away from this man."

Y/N shrugged and giggled. "It's alright. I like dancing and you're an excellent partner. I don't mind at all, but I am getting tired.', she confessed sheepishly. Charles looked around for her potential aggresor, and once he deemed it safe for her, he led her away from the crowd and to a seat that had been reserved for her family.

"Thank you, Mr. Lee." Y/N said softly as she stretched her legs under the table. Lee smiled briefly before standing in front of the L/N table and looking out for her ex-fiancé.

Time to Go Home.

Finally, it was time for the guests to leave. The L/Ns were some of the first to leave. Charles and Sebastian followed after them in their own carriage.

"That was a very wise thing to do, Mr. Lee." Sebastian smiled. "What do you mean?" Charles looked at the raven haired butler. "Steering Miss L/N away from that cad. You did it so discreetly, not even her parents noticed her distress."

"That was all her. She kept calm and played along. Plus, keeping her safe is my job, isn't it?" Charles looked out the window. Sebastian nodded and did the same.
