My vision flickered as I fell through the blue expanse of the sky. Sometimes I couldn't see anything as I fell through the clouds. Nothing but a vast expanse of white. It was an odd sensation, almost as if my body had reached limbo. "So..this is the end.. I didn't expect it to end so soon..." I thought to myself. However a sharp jolt brought me back to my senses. As I managed to turn my head slightly, Ryon came into view, he was holding me. His wings strained in an attempt to keep us aloft, however I could tell that we were slowly losing altitude.
"I..may have used too much magic just now.." Ryon muttered. I sighed as we touched down, Ryon stumbled slightly although he managed to keep his grip on me. His head turned upward as he gazed into the sky. As I followed his gaze, I found what he was looking at. Maeror floated high above in the clouds, the telltale glint of his silver armor giving away his position. However just then a horn sounded in the distance.
Three long blasts, and then all was silent. Ryon and I frantically looked for the source of the noise, however it was then I realized just where exactly we were. The walls of the blasted city loomed in the distance, smoke rose from a single area inside. "How in the world.." I said before Ryon answered. "Leucos left off quite a explosion. I'm pretty sure we would've been vaporized had I not erected barriers. Even so, we were still sent flying quite a ways."
"Is Leucos okay!?" I choked back a sob as Ramael's broken form and Leucos's tormented face came rushing back to mind. Ryon gave me a grave look and shifted slightly. "To be completely honest with you. I don't know. However in the meantime. We have bigger problems to worry about." He said as he pointed towards the horizon. A column of dark figures were in the process of shambling out of the city and onto the main road, headed directly for us. There had to be hundreds, if not thousands of them. "What..are they?" I murmured quietly.
"Maeror has summoned his army. I think now would be a good time to exit stage left." Ryon said before he grabbed my hand and started sprinting across the plain. Towards the haze in the distance that marked the start of the marshes.
"I hope they're okay.." I said between gasps as we continued to run. "Don't worry about them. Although they look like children, they're older than both you and I combined. Not to mention the fact Leucos has a temper that puts most thunderstorms to shame." He deadpanned managing to make me chuckle despite the dire circumstances of the situation.
After we ran several leauges, we were forced to stop. Ryon could've kept going all day, however I wasn't that fit, and slowly began to lag behind. As we panted and attempted to catch our breath, Ryon looked towards the horizon behind us. Maeror's host continued its unwavering march, and the god of sorrow himself had descended and now marched along with his army. His silver armor glinted coldly among the backdrop of his blackened host. Even from this far away, he shone with the luster of a cold and cruel star.
"We need to keep moving" Ryon said as he turned back to stare at me. "I'm not sure how much farther I can go.." I murmured. "We need to reach the marshes, once we get there we should be able to lose them in the bogs." Ryon said before he grabbed my arm and pulled me down the road. "Where..Do we even have a plan after we lose them.." I said as I attempted to catch my breath.
"We're heading back to the capitol of your kingdom, and we're forcing your oh so benevolent king to help." He said with a scowl. "He said no last time to Leucos and I last time..I don't think he'll take kindly to you demanding.." I said quietly, almost to myself. "The difference between you two and me is, I'll actually put a knife to the kings throat when I deliver my demands." Ryon said as he quickened his pace.
"Uh..I don't think that's a good idea.." I muttered. "I'm so glad I have you as the voice of reason." Ryon deadpanned while rolling his eyes. "I thought the voice of reason was Tyra." Ryon looked back at me momentarily with a look of disbelief on his face before he responded. "Tyra and reason in the same sentence. The world really is ending." I scoffed and said, "She's perfectly capable of making rational decisions." Ryon's response was full blown laughter. "Are you sure we're talking about the same person?" He said after he managed to regain some of his composure.
"Yes I'm sure!" I exclaimed while tugging on on his arm in a futile attempt to slow our pace. "Tyra, the one who kills first, and lets the gods sort the rest out? That's your voice of reason?!" Ryon said with a note of incredulity in his voice. "It sounded better in my head..." I said quietly. He snorted and quickened our pace once again. The dark smudge on the horizon was slowly becoming more distinct as we neared the marshes.
"It'll be dark soon, we need to hurry. I'd rather not be caught out in the open with an un-dead army on our heels." Ryon said. The sun was already making its descent and the overcast sky was darkening rapidly. I had managed to keep pace with Ryon all day, however my stamina was failing. At the point, he was almost forced to carry me.
After an hour of traveling, we finally reached the marsh. The sun had long since set, and darkness swallowed the landscape. Ryon had insisted we not use were-lights as the light would reveal exactly where we were. I stumbled several times before Ryon found a tree that was to his liking. Several minutes of swearing, falling and quietly cast spells later, we were safely sitting in a low growing tree. Just before I passed out from exhaustion, one thought crossed my mind.
"Tyra. Ramael. Leucos. I'm going to send Maeror to hell, and then I'm finding you three."
