Ch.6
"Hey." I snapped my head up and gave Kevin a nod as he sat down in front of me in the cafeteria.
"'Sup, Kev? I didn't see you yesterday." He grimaced, while digging through his bag for his lunch.
"Yeah, something came up." I raised an eyebrow, waiting for an explanation.
"It's nothing." he waved it off, obviously not wanting to tell me. Whatever.
"Oh, yeah, why didn't you tell me that Jake was your brother?" Kevin didn't look up, he just shrugged.
"You never asked."
"And you didn't think it was relevant enough to bring up?" Now he looked up, and he looked slightly annoyed.
"Actually, no, I didn't. Why would it be? I'd rather not be associated with him and whatever problems he has with you."
"Right. Sorry." I hadn't meant to make it look like he had done something wrong, I just didn't like that he hadn't told me and that I had to hear it from someone else.
"It's cool."
"What's his problem anyway?" I had seen bullies before, but Jake seemed overly hostile.
"You mean aside from the major stick up his ass? Well, for some reason he has taken after our mom when it comes to certain topics. Mom's side of the family are extremely religious, and while mom's not as bad as them she's still pretty religious, thereof the whole homosexuality is a sin thing. Jake's dropped the religious part, he just got the hate."
"Really? But your dad seems so chill about it."
"He is. They just kind of steer clear of those conversations."
"Hey guys!" Out of nowhere Nick appeared and plopped down on a chair beside me.
"Ugh." I put my head in my hands.
"What? I haven't done anything!"
"It's not that you've done anything, it's just... you." I didn't really have anything against the guy, but he was fun to tease. I'd decided that I'd give him a chance. I really hoped that I wouldn't regret it.
"Ouch." he put a hand over his heart, "That hurt."
"I'm sure it did."
"Did you want something, Nick?" Kevin asked, looking at him expressionlessly.
"Whoa, déjà vu. No wonder you hang out with him." he said to me, cocking his thumb towards Kevin before turning to him again, "And no, little Larson. I just came by to say hi. And now I've gotta go. See ya'." and then he left.
"I don't really get him. He's literally all over the place and so different from Jake that I don't even get how they can be so close." I wondered out loud.
"They've known each other for a very long time, and he's been like that for as long as I can remember. They kind of balance each other out. But he's okay, I guess."
Maybe he is.
"Psst! Mark!" Nick whisper yelled from the desk behind me.
"What?!" I said back, not turning around in case the teacher noticed. God, this guy could really get on your nerves.
"Are you free after school?"
"Why?"
"Let's hang out!"
