Ch. 11
We walked to Jake's place in silence. I'd glance at him now and then when it felt like he was looking at me, but he'd be quick with hiding it and looking somewhere else. I was tempted to just grab him and shake him until he told me what was up with him, but he'd probably just punch me, then I'd punch him back and that would ruin whatever friendship thing we had.
I'm getting increasingly confused when it comes to him and his intentions towards me. It's obvious that he isn't very fond of me, constantly glaring and previously always picking fights, but there's got to be more to it or he wouldn't have helped me yesterday with Gabriel. And he wouldn't have made sure I was alright the whole night. Which was kind of nice. He wasn't as aggressive as he usually is. He was still cold, granted, but I didn't expect him to wait on me hand and foot, though he was surprisingly reasonable and shockingly thoughtful.
We were almost at their door when I decided to try something.
"Hey, Jake?"
He glared at me, "What?"
"Thanks for yesterday."
He looked away, scowling, and didn't say anything.
"Why'd you do it?"
"None of your business." he replied icily.
"But it kind of is since, y'know, it was me you helped." I reasoned. He stopped and turned towards me.
"I don't know, okay? What do you want me to say? That I care about you? That I like you?" he sneered. My temper flared.
"God forbid that happening. Then you'd be just another faggot." I spat out, then stomped away towards their house.
I don't even know why I blew up like that. It's not like I care about him or what he thinks. I felt a strange twinge in my chest.
Before I reached the door he grabbed my arm and yanked me around. I stood face to face with an angry Jake, so close that our shoes were almost touching.
"What?" I didn't back away, I just matched his glare with one of my own. We were both holding eye contact, none of us looking away. I saw the emotions swirling in his eyes, like an oncoming storm.
"You're expecting too much."
"What do you mean?"
He started walking forward, forcing me back against the door.
"This is not some kind of cliché story where I suddenly turn good and fall for you." He slammed his hand on the door, right next to my head, for emphasis. I flinched involuntarily. He noticed and it seemed like he got more of a thoughtful look over him, mixed with the anger. I frowned, studying his features, thinking about his actions, his behavior, until it dawned on me.
"But you have already."
He kept looking at me. The tension slowly dissipated until his glare turned into a stare. I saw his Adam's apple bob as he swallowed, then he started clenching his jaw and the glare was back. He clenched his hand into a fist on the door before he suddenly backed away, wrenched the door open and walked inside. I grabbed the door handle, sighing, before I went inside and closed the door after me.
"Marc!"
"Oomph!"
Nick had arrived and as soon as he saw me he practically lifted me up in a tight hug, "Can't. Breathe."
"Don't care. Shut up and let me have my moment." So I let him suffocate me until he felt that he was done and set me down again, clearing his throat. Kevin had stood by, watching amused. Suddenly Nick put both his hands on my cheeks, pushing them together, making my lips pout so that I probably looked like a retarded fish.
