So here is a little bunch of images to follow as I go in depth on my methods!

So here is a little bunch of images to follow as I go in depth on my methods!

1.) As the image says, draw the whole thing and add flat colors. If the flat color is too saturated, it doesn't give much room for effects and shading.

2.) I normally like to do this first, but it can be done at any time. I recommend putting on a few different layers so you can really detail it. There's not much else on it.

3.) It gets more complicated here. The trick is to think about where bone and muscle is in the animal. I set my watercolor brush to a decently large size and have 100% opacity (But I have soft edges on. I think airbrush at 100% may work the same way?) and use the same color as the one under or erase to show the lighter color.

If you have a hard time figuring out where light hits, you can refer to the drawings.

The color choice is normally a slightly cooler color that is darker but not black. Black can often be too dark so I would be wary of using it to shade.

4.) Next I add to the picture by making the brush smaller and lowering opacity so it blends. I'll also add another color or 2 to blend.

5.) I add another layer and use another color to highlight (again, refer to drawing for placement) and set it to add. I lower the opacity so that its not too bright.

6.) I just recolor the line art so that its not too in your face and fix any discontinuities between coloring and lines.

Unofficial 7.) I add what I call environmental shading. I choose a color similar to the lighting color and do highlights from the light source then I fill in the whole animal to a similar color to a darker color in the image. I set both to add and mess with opacity until I like it.

That's just my way of doing it, though. I encourage experimentation until you like how you shade.

I hope this helped!
