It Should've Been You

I was standing in front of a mirror, trying to fix my tie. This entire getup- a tux, fancy shoes, a white dress shirt, and tie -was all for a wedding Nico had asked me to go to. This was one of the reasons I didn't want to go. The other was the fact that my friend never told me who was getting hitched.

"Leo, do you need help?" the Italian's voice questioned from behind me.

With a quick eye-roll, I turn and let him fix my tie. "You know, you should really tell me who's getting married. If it's happening tomorrow, don't you think I have a right to know?"

Nico looked up at me, and I saw a hint of regret in his eyes. After a moment, I turn back to the mirror.

"It's them, isn't it?"

"Leo, I'm sorry. Yes, it's them. I didn't tell you because I knew you wouldn't come if you knew," Nico explained, regret in his tone. "What even happened between the three of you? Weren't you all friends?"

The thought of that made me wince, but I sigh. "We were. How long do we have?"

"Three hours. One before we have to leave."

It seems like enough time for me to explain my history. With a groan, I nod, heading over to the table. The younger followed, sitting across from me.

"Well," I start, "it all started seven years ago when I was fifteen..."

Seven years from present~

I was walking through the camp, holding hands with a blonde boy I'd been crushing on for weeks. He'd occasionally compliment me or say something, but I hardly paid attention to it.

That is, until he said one thing. "Leo, my parents are homophobic."

I stopped walking, turning to look him in the eye. "Where did this come from? It's just a calming walk, Jason, not a place you just drop a bomb like that."

"I know," Jason sighed, pressing a kiss on my lips, pulling me close by my hips. When he pulled back, he sighed. "I know I love you, but my parents wouldn't allow our relationship to be real."

"So what are you saying?" I whisper, feeling his hand rub against my hip.

Jason smirked at me, and I felt my face heat up. "I saw an isolated cabin a few miles from here. Maybe we could..."

"Hell yeah," I smirk back, kissing him quickly before letting him lead me away.

Five years from present~

Jason moved into town, and he now goes to my school. We had to break up because his parents found out about our little affair two years ago. Still, I loved him with everything I had, but every time our eyes met, I could see the regret in his eyes. Then again, I saw that in Piper's eyes a lot now too.

It was so hard for me not to approach my best friend about that. She and I made a deal to never date each other's exes, and if she broke that promise...

"Hey, Valdez," Piper greeted as she elbowed me playfully. "You look stressed."

My fingers dug into my books as I looked her in the eye. "You haven't broken our promise, have you? You didn't start dating one of my exes?"

She looked away from me, scoffing. "I feel so offended you'd think I'd do something like that."

"You're lying," I glare at her. "What the hell, Piper?! Jason was my boyfriend! You said you'd never date one of my exes!"
