It was a peaceful afternoon, the wind was blowing at a gentle pace, the birds were singing their sweet song, the sun was shining brightly upon the Pridelands, and the cubs of Priderock were splashing and swimming in the hippo's pond.
Sarabi and her best friend, Sarafina, were resting with the other lionesses in the cool shade of an acacia clump. They watched their cubs play around in the water as they relaxed on the rocks, bathing in the peace of the perfect afternoon.
Towards the banks of the pond, three cubs were playing "Marco Polo". The two lionesses watched as Simba stood in the middle, maneuvering around the two female cubs, Tama and Nala, as they called out the two words back and forth.
"They're growing up so fast," Sarafina mused quietly as her teal colored eyes lingered on the splashing cubs.
"Yeah, they are," Sarabi agreed. "But it's nice that I don't have to watch Simba as closely as I used too. The older they get, the more free time I have."
Sarafina chuckled lightly as she thought about how true her friend's statement was.
"Free time is nice," Sarafina smiled.
The two slowly closed their eyes as they drifted off into a calming cat nap. The warm air and the soft breeze made them feel sleepy, and Sarabi wasn't going to miss this chance to enjoy herself.
But just as Sarabi fell into slumber, she was gently nudged awake. She fluttered her amber eyes open and saw her husband, Mufasa, rubbing her with his snout gently to wake her.
"Hey, Muffy," she whispered, glancing to Sarafina who was still resting. "Is everything okay?"
"Everything's is just fine," he replied, taking a small step back and looking deeply into her eyes.
"Well, you're finished with your patrol early," she stated.
"Yes I am, that's why I came here." Mufasa deep voice said.
Sarabi tilted her head and gave him a curious look, "What?"
"I was hoping that you would grant me a swim," he whispered softly with a smile spreading across his face.
"A swim?" She repeated.
"Yes, a swim. You and me, enjoying the cool water together, no cubs, no distractions, just us." Mufasa explained.
Sarabi narrowed her eyes with a small smile. She examined him and made sure he was in good health.
"What brought this on?" She asked.
"My deep love for my beautiful wife," Mufasa replied.
She pondered his proposal for a moment. Then she stood up and nuzzled into his ruby red mane.
"Okay, Muffy,"
"Wonderful,"
Sarabi stepped off the rocks she was lounging on and placed her paws on the dusty savanna terrain. Her sparkling amber eyes lifted to her husband's face. He gave her a smile and turned to leave the hippos pond.
Mufasa lead the way to a small pond that was deserted by all animals, a rare sight on a hot day as this. He took her to the banks of the pond and slowly made his way in. She followed, a wide smile crossing her face as she felt the water engulf her warm fur.
"I love to see your smile," Mufasa said as Sarabi swam a circle around him.
His amber eyes followed her around the pond as she dived and swam around.
"Oh, Muffy, you're so sweet!" She called, lauging.
Mufasa swiped his paw across the top of the water, sending a splash into her face, causing her to giggle happily.
Mufasa and Sarabi began to gracefully swim around in a traditional water dance done by husband and wife, and as the sun began to fall lower in the sky, the two slowed their play and nuzzled lovingly.
"Sarabi," Mufasa began.
"Yes?" She prompted.
"I love you more than the sun, moon, and stars above." He replied, embracing her tenderly and licking her cheek.
