Ayana.
"Ring Ring Ring!!" My alarm went off. I rolled over and pressed the snooze button. I got up, stretched and yawned. It was 7:00 in morning. Today's my first day of High School in America. I was somewhere in between excited and scared. Will I make any friends?
I went to the bathroom and turned the shower on. I made sure I was really clean. I'm not gonna be smelly, especially on my first day. What people will think of me? I stepped out and wrapped a towel around. Then I stood in the mirror and put product in my hair. I decided I was going to wear it down today. It's always been fluffy, thick, and long. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. In Brazil, I'd get teased about it, but ever since I moved here, I get compliments from random people.
I pulled out my clothes from my closet. A simple pair of black jeans and a light-orange short sleeve. Nothing complicated. I put on some lip balm, grabbed my phone, charger, and earphones, put them in my backpack and headed downstairs.
"Bom dia Avo. (Good morning Grandma)," I said as I entered the living room. My grandmother sat on the couch knitting. She was 75, pecan toned, with shoulder length, curly, gray hair and wrinkles. She looked up and smiled.
"Bom dia Caro, como voce dormui? (Good morning dear, how did you sleep?)" she said. I gave her a big hug.
Portuguese is her first language, so we just speak it to make easier for her and myself to some extent.
"Eu dormi bem. Fiquei nervoso a noite toda hoije. (I slept okay. I was nervous all night about today.)"
"Tenho certeza que voce estara bem, apenas relaxe e seja voce mesmo. (I'm sure you be just fine, just relax and be yourself.)" she said.
I grabbed a granola bar out of the cabinet. She's right. That's what I need to do! Just be my self!
"Voce esta certo Avo! Isso e exatamente o que eu vou fazer. (You're right Grandma! That's just what I'll do.)"
I put on my gray jacket and black sneakers.
"Essa e minha garota, tenha um bom dia na escola! (That's my girl, have a good day at school!)"
"Eu vou, eu te amo! (I will, I love you!)"
"Eu tambem te amo. (I love you too.)"
At School
"Okay class quiet down now!" said Mrs Jones. There I stood, in first period, in front of my new classmates.
"This is our new student Ayana Rodriguez."
"Hi." I said shyly with a small smile. Why are they so intimidating?
Today's her first day, so please be nice."
A few girls smiled, some boys starred me down, I heard whispering in back. I couldn't quite make it out.
"Ayana's from Brazil." said Mrs Jones.
"ooohhh" "Foreal??" "Whaaaat?" "woww" "Cool." Was all I heard. Hm, seems like they're kinda intrigued. That's a good sign.
"You're seat's right back there." she pointed to a desk, near the back.
On my way to my seat, this light brown skin girl with long straight black hair shot me a dirty look. I smiled, and she squinted her hazel eyes in hate. What's her problem? I sat down.
"Okay class, so today we'll be talking about the Bubonic Plague. So in 1329..."
I reached in my backpack and pulled out my notebook to take notes. I could feel someone staring at me. I looked to my right to see a really cute boy with brown skin, curly hair, and dimples smiling at me.
